whats the accepted bum bag and jacket protocol?

over or under ? no jacket and just take the rain?

my water proof seems to ride up over the bag leaving hte bum bag to get soaked and covered in crud.

also what do you do when you get hot? and the bum bag is too small to stuff the coat in?

I`m coming around slowly to not having a pack on some rides. But i can see some limitations for winter!

maybe i need a pack i can strap stuff to?

integrated tools would probably be an answer cant be doing with integrated tools - i`ve 3 bikes. also strapping crap to the bike is just a bit naff. bit like bottle cages and stuff ( i know, I know, i need to get over this)

cheers,

mark

over the bag for me, the underside of the bag is sadly still exposed to a bit of wheel spray

Undo the zip. If your memories are with waterproof coat and big backpack, the restriction in airflow from the bag straps means the jacket is still hot. With nothing holding it to your body you can bleed of a load of heat.

Would you have a backpack under your jacket? Same rule applies

EDC tool in steerer, few bits in the bottom of the steerer behind a Fork Cork. Sahmurai swords in the ends of the bars.

Bumbag under the waterproof.
If I get hot, I unzip the jacket but once it's on, it's on. Best way to carry it is on the body.

And mudguards, then everything is less mucky than it could be.

well yes i do undo the zip but its still a waterproof and therefore really hot. I do run hot generally so i guess this may not be such an issue for others. its a decent altura water proof with pit zips, vents and the like, not a boil in the bag £12 job BTW.

If you strap the bum bag over the jacket dont you just get really bloody hot with no airflow out of the jacket?

I run hot as well. It's nasty riding in a waterproof when the sun comes out but I just suck it up. I'll typically under dress though and accept getting a bit wet in drizzle rather than hot in a full waterproof.

I use an Ortlieb bumbag. It's fully waterproof and built to outlast a nuclear apocalypse. Why would I wear it under my jacket?

If you've no space in your bum bag surely you just roll it into a sausage and tie it around your waist?

Jacket over bum bag so grit doesn't get between bag and jacket and wreck the jacket. Mudguards aren't perfect.

Im lost how you can be so prissy about stuff strapped to a bike (which i tend to agree with) but then strap on a bloody bum bag?

A seat pack or frame bag or jesters hat looks better than that!

IMO it doesn't look as daft as a camelbak.

A bumbag should have a bungee for your coat, and little pockets on the belt for items that you want to have handy.

I think wearing your coat over it is best as it keeps everything dry, but that would mean needing a coat with a very long tail so it doesn't ride up and over the bag.

With regards to tools, surely all you need is a mini-pump, a decent multi-tool and a tube? A well maintained bike rarely needs tinkering with.

This summer I was converted to the ways of the bum bag for my rides but I have switched back to a smaller bag for winter months as I like to take 2 jackets one for cold/stopping for mechanicals or food and one for wet weather /spray). Do still have frame bags for essentials still.

Mudguards look bad but function so good!

I rarely bother with a proper waterproof jacket when riding, only take one if I'm going up an actual mountain or out into the hills for the day, and then I take a Camelback.

All other rides I take a windproof that packs down really small, small enough to go in my Dakine Hotlaps bum bag.

Jacket under, stash it in a ziploc bag in one of the two bottle holders on the bag when not in use. Jacket over is just uncomfortable.

Accept that you get muddy mountain biking or use a but fender!

You probably wish to do the opposite...

Bumbag under ... round the front.
The bumbag at the front underneath makes me look fat complimenting my unprofessional image with my jeans. Plus it keeps my cigarettes dry so I can light up at the top of hills

haha! instant beer belly! - i like it!

I`m quite liking stuff the coat in a bottle cage option.

i`ve been inflicted to so much moaning about frame straps wearing frames that i dont want to go there.

i do have mudguards but not massive ones. I dont mind muddy or wet. in fact the wetter teh better IMHO. no grip and vision makes it more fun!

Its all a comprimise i suppose. It was easy when backpacks were cool! Haha. my alpkit gourdon drybag backpack is awesome for winter rainy rides as its actualy waterproof and you can just hose it down with the bike after. maybe i`ll revert to that and keep the bumbag for dry/not rainy days.

How small is your bumbag? Or how loose is your jacket? Under is not even an option for me.

I hose it down post-ride, then put it near the dehumidifier.

i know its against the accepted protocol (and fashion sense) but i got a shower cap and put elastic and a button on it and use that as a rain cover for the bum bag. Not my best idea but it seems work, feel free to heckle if you see on the hills

To be honest also stops it catching on the saddle... but this season I've been culturing the "stealth look" ... on my cheap HT. I think its partly down to all the new riders with expensive bikes and all the kit and partly cos they opened new DJ's and I can go from the DJ and do a couple of laps after.

It's become a bit of a joke with my mates now and I get all sorts of "helpful" advice from people with loads of gear. Funny thing is when we go somewhere more "serious" no-one blinks an eye ... or critically looks over the bike and then asks genuinely interesting Q's...

I'm a full concert to jackets with sleeves that zip off and go in the jacket pocket leaving a gillet. Perfect for anything not a biblical downpour.

I bought a cheap bumbag this year in a psa on here from terra nova. Very lightweight and a cheap way to test. I love it so might invest in an ortlieb one

How do you possibly catch a pack on the saddle when it's round the back? Surely it catches far more when it's below your gut?

Bumbag and potentially one 2 many layers.... I pack a velcro stash strap in my pocket / bumbag so i can either strap the coat on the frame or the soreen goodness is strapped on and i try to perfectly time malt loaf consumption and getting hot....
