We're off for a week's holiday in that there mid-Wales, staying at Fforest Fields near Builth Wells. MrsIHN and I are trying to decide whether to take road bikes or gravel bikes and I can see there's a lot of what look like farm-track type stuff on Aberedw Hill, just behind where we're staying. Anyone know if they're comfortably doable on a gravel bike?
And if you were staying around there, would you take a gravel bike or a road bike?
I've ridden on the nearby Llandeilo and Llanbedr hills, and from memory they were certainly all gravel bike friendly enough. I think there's enough to explore in the wider area to take gravel bikes, even if some routes are just rough back roads. There's some tracks and bridleways around Pant-y-llyn hill I'd want to explore too, south of Builth.
MTB Marathon used some of those tracks, don't remember anything that wouldn't be doable on a gravel bike.
All the fast boys were on XC hardtails, nothing too knarly at all.
Great tracks in the dry!

Don't mind at all if you need to request to follow for the route, can't remember if my Strava is private or not.
We stayed there last year. Nice site and apart from some of them being steeply up were mainly rideable on my rigid MTB with fat G One gravel tyres. Walking or riding from the tent up into the hills is great. Bits of the bridleway between there and Builth are a bit rough on a run to the shops but worth exploring with empty panniers.
The NCN route back from Rhyader was nice and probably best on a gravel bike as it involves a fair few tracks. The paths up to the reservoirs from Rhyader are also good.
Are you taking a paddle board to play on the campsite pond? Site sold milk, bread and local meat from their freezer and has a cafe. Despite being a big site it was well spaced out and quite chilled. We are considering a return.
