Hi all. Getting one of my old tourers up and going, fyi a Revel Romany.
The back wheel was shot and have sourced an early 90's Mavic hub that uses sealed cartridge bearings which is great. My next problem is that it requires a freewheel with French threads. Ideally a wide range job 7 speed cant seem to find anything new with French thread. Kicking myself because the wheel that came of it ended up in the bin, should have kept free wheel!
Should be std threads if it's 90s I think?
Buy a new wheel , unless the old wheel had French threads unlikely as Revel were iirc a uk brand it would not have fitted
The original wheel was junk so it is long gone. The spacing at the rear dropouts is ,I think, 126mm which makes it very hard to source a new wheel.
I have got, on its way, a hub, which is stated as having french thread for the freewheel. Jumped at the chance on the hub as it utilizes sealed cartridge bearings so should last a lifetime
You’ll get a 130 mm hub in a 126 rear end , with no problem. Revel are steel aren’t they, will take 4mm. The availability of French thread freewheels is limited, google indicates it’s far worse than limited, and they’re not cross compatible . You can pick a rear wheel up for £30 ish
I think the wheel I have in there at the moment is 128mm. Got another tourer with 130mm rear wheel, I thought I tried it once and was unable to get it in. Maybe I should have another go.
Definitely the option of the mavic paris gao dakar hub is not the easy option but is obviously more period.
You actually want a French thread freewheel? They weren't even original on that bike.
Have you looked on www.leboncoin.fr ?
I didn't originally want a French free wheel bit the hub I purchased has the thread may have to shelve the plan with the hub if it's too problematic.
Been in the shed and had a measure up the revell measures 124mm at the drop outs. I have a non descript rear wheel in there at the moment, I have to ease the dropouts apart to get it in.
I also have another tourer circa 1997, I have tried to get that wheel in but can quite get the frame to spread enough. Measuring the distance at the dropouts on the other tourer, Henry Burton that measures 132mm, I didn't even know that was a size!
Dont want a budget cheap wheel but if I can get 130mm in there than obviously the world is my oyster. Not keen on cup and cone!
