Just had a nice relaxing day doing some odds and sods. Serviced my Inbred tourer as we're going away at the end of the month, all good. Until I found a crack in the frame.
So now I have 4 days off until we go away and I've got to come up with a bike capable of pulling trailer up Scottish hills by bastardising the Inbred for it's triple drivetrain and some other bits, probably the bars off my fatbike, a random set of Deore brakes I've got hanging around and whatever else I can lay my hands on and banging it all on my Croix de Fer.
Arse. Triple arse and other rude words.

Is this your wonder metal orange painted one that you had repaired back in the day?

move your complain to first world problems thread,

you have a broken frame,
you have a frame to put the bits on,
you have days available in which to do this

heart bleeds

In fairness it's probably been there for a year or two at least. I had a bit of gaffa tape there as a cable rub patch, I'd just serviced the bike ready for our tour and thought it looked crap so I took it off to change it.
Wish I hadn't now!
It's definitely a crack though - Spray some gt85 on it and it seeps through inside th seat tube instantly.

That sounds more like a design feature to prevent stuck aluminium seatposts to me.

Scotland? Pop it past the shop when you come and I'll braze on an ugly but strong patch to get you going.

Go to a local fabrication workshop and ask them to blob some weld on it

Thanks for the offer Ben. I'm gonna go the rebuilt CdF route and get this frame properly sorted, new seat tube and a re spray. Do you do that sort of thing?

If not, who would people recommend? I had it done by Argos in Bristol last time but their prices have gone through the the roof it seems 🙁

Honest answer is it's not worth sorting that properly - because it's TIG welded, can't just remove the seat tube, need to cut and grind it out, which is a lot of work. On something of great value it's maybe worth doing, on an Inbred not so much 😉

It'll be repaired. It's had 2 major repairs and It'll be getting a third.
Argos want £120 for a new seat tube, and about £160 for paint plus transfers. That's my starting point and I'm quite happy to pay that much if no one else will do it. 🙂

Is the crack running right to the top of the picture under the paint?

If that was a car it'd be a write off. Too much money to repair a cheap frame.

Weld along the crack, over running each end and grind back to tidy.

Or flux up inside and out and flow some brazing rod in (silver or bronze).

Will keep it going nicely for your trip and probably a lot longer.

You've got about an hour left on this On-One Inbred Pick'n'Mix offer. £199 for a 26er or 29er Inbred plus a bunch of finishing kit. Treat yourself! :-)

*actually I may have misread that. The time limit might be for a Gatorade bottle at the bottom of the page. It's a little confusing when viewing the website on a phone! 🙂

£280 to fix a frame vs £150-£200 for a newun...

Might there be a more economical repair option than Argos?

Am i missing something .

I've got a large red 853 inbred in good condition not doing much at the moment if you fancy another frame. Currently built up but could dismantle if you're interested. Chris King headset.

it's worth repairing, because those frames were high end to compete with dekerf and the like, before they went gas pipe for the masses.

to all the 'it's uneconomical' bods - it's hardly a part of an investment portfolio is it? It's a bike and if he likes it/has sentimental value why not chuck a ton at it? People on here pay that for a couple of tyres. Gah.

I said it was uneconomical because it would cost more to fix than to buy a new one - but I totally get the sentimental value thing.

I have 2 of the 853 frames from this era - I'd be gutted if one of mine broke - love these frames

Hi Pete.

I can speak to my mate Paul (who welded your Ducati tank) to stick a bead on that for you. Let me know if you want me to get in touch with him.

Not 853 I can't, they don't make them any more. 🙂
Thanks for all the offers of bikes and frames chaps, very much appreciated.
I've almost finished converting my CdF into a triple ringged tourer at minimal cost.
A large Inbred is too big for me too. 🙂

This is exactly. I love this frame. I can't imagine a better fit or ride and it's incredibly versatile.
I've met old blokes riding 40 year old bik s because they love them and this will be my equivalent. It's long since got past the point of anything 'economical' or 'sensible' anyway. I was going to strip it and get it repainted next year anyway so another £120 for a seat tube is fine by me, although I do fancy going to a different frame builder this time.

I don't think I have an emotional attachment to any of my bikes, I like them but I'll swap them out when I need to. Not really an issue.

I am hoping my Tour De Fer will be like this bike, battered and bruised in 20 years time and needing refreshing. I struggle to find bikes that fit but the TDF is great for me and again so versatile.
