Hi folks .. hoping for suggestions please .
I love rigid 29 plus but have a niggling urge to build up a suitable frame ( ideally steel but all considered ) with a 100/120 29 plus sus fork up front ( already acquired tapered steerer ) and as much clearance out back as possible for wide rims and rubber . Ideally I'd like to go full 29 x3.0 /3.25 at both ends but realize such frames are few and far between and often relatively pricey even 2nd hand... like Krampus/ Rooster/ Karate monkey etc so am wondering what else would be cheap but still work well . My income is minimal hence looking for budget ideas.
I am happy to go down sizewise at the rear but ideally would be keen to have minimum 29x 2.6 on 35mm Inner width rim .
I prefer a more easy going general purpose "all terrain " bike and won't be charging down steep fast rocky downhills. My riding is more mellow these days ..bimbling + fitness/ nature .
If anyone has any frame suggestions it would be great ..preferably older budget options if indeed they do exist . I have never owned a bike with anything other than straight 1/18th forks and skinny headtubes so unfamiliar with the choices available that might work .
Thanks in advance , much appreciated
Bill
Hi Bill,
A Genesis Tarn frame might work for you. Tapered head tube, steel, 120mm, slack but not too slack head angle, officially 2.6” rear tyre but looks like something larger might fit. They can be had fairly cheaply compared to some other brands. Stealth add as I do have one in the classified section currently.
thanks for that ..will have a ponder .
I would actually probably prefer 100mm travel up front as I ride a lot of rough tarmac back lanes here in Devon for training and between easy off road so don't need excess travel ..Probably I don't need it at all tbh but love comfort at my age .
You'd need to specify boost/non-boost to narrow it down a bit.
On-One Scandal will take a 2.6 and is slack enough that you'll get away with a slightly shorter fork I think.
Prefer non boost ... scandal might be an idea .
I think the scandal is boost as is the Tarn and also my other suggestion an orange P7 if you could pick one up cheap.
salsa fargo ti. 3'' tyre room front and rear.
iknow a bloke with a nearly new xl frame and fork............ ;o)
Trek Stache come up second hand quite cheap. Proper 29+ (will take 3.25 i think), surprisingly short rear stays, fairly light ally frame all make for a good (if not so niche / fashionable) ride.
Ragley big al will go 2.5 and probably 2.6 rear.
