You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi I think my road bike is seizing up whilst on the turbo trainer - the levers are catching each other when changing. A thread on here a few days ago suggested sticky cables.
In an amazing moment of foresight I thought I would watch some GCN videos, order the cables and replace in time for the glorious lock down free spring riding (and avoid home schooling). After a search online I was bamboozled by the amount of Shimano replacement kits, prices and out of stock. It looks like Wiggle and Amazon have some kits available but what is the minimum quality / price I can get away with for long lasting slick shifting?
Thanks (sorry for naive new roady question, I do know if it was my mountain bikes I would just Jagwire and it would last for years)
Clarkes stainless are cheap and good. Planet X
As above, Clarke's, Halfords is usually well stocked.
Wiggle lifeline stuff is good for things like this. I've been impressed with their performance stuff which often comes in the same price as everyone else's standard.
If you want to do the outers as well as inners then the Shimano kits are good, and good value- and then once you've got everything going nicely, in future just use stainless inners
Thanks all. Northwind is that polymer coated Shimano outers?
Sorry another dumb question. I went with the Shimano kits with polymer coating. Brakes all good and rear derailleur cable changed so far without hiccup, other than a sheared pinch bolt on the rear mech.
But both the existing front and back gear cables have exposed sections which at points have a thin plastic piping covering them. This was welded solid to the rear cable and had gone sticky on the outside so i can see why the changes were sticky. Should this be replaced ? If so there was none in the kit, any ideas where can I buy some ?
Thanks
Amazon for the PTFE liner. I'll go check my orders as I bought some for under the BB shell on my refurb project.
