Hi
Any good websites to buy budget prescription cycling glasses online?
I am looking for frames and lenses together.
Thanks.
Having just attempted this myself I can only speak of my experience, using an online supplier didn’t work out cost effective for me.
Sending them your prescription is easy enough but some measurements are also required to get the vision dialled in correctly.
After taking photos with a ruler across your eyebrows and sending them in it’s still pot luck if you can see perfect when they arrive.
I’ll visit a local optician next time, that way there’s no argument who got it wrong when you can’t see correctly through them.
Go to your local optician and ask them to make you up a set using polycarbonate lenses. Dirt cheap and really strong/shatter-proof. It is all I use for work and riding. My prescription in polycarb is about £70 for the 2 lenses. In thinned glass (which I need due to strength) they cost about £250
Try Asda
Can get glasses with lenses for around £80 and no extra charge if you need thinner lenses or varifocals. and they will give you two pairs for not much more.
I've bought several pairs from https://www.rxsport.co.uk/ over the years - no problems and they are very helpful on the phone + email. Website backed up with real people you can talk to.
EDIT - I went online after bad experiences with Vision Express + David Culow stores
From £25 a pair of single
Vision from Specsavers.
I have used Goggles 4u many times (no connection to them at all, just always had good experience). Not cycling specific but cheap enough to use and throw away. Got the measurement last time in the opticians when they were replacing my lenses in my good glasses. Did have to write the distance between eyes down as it didn't come on the printed prescription.
Frame design and fitting is a bit hit and miss, had one set that are an awful fit a few years ago but still use them when working on the car/bikes or painting now. Generally buy two sets every 12 to 18 months and use them for biking only. Wipe them on dirty riding kit way too often, throw them in bags and leave them lose around the van as I just don't care about them. Vision is spot on and the last pair have lasted really, really well. Have crashed in them and had branches hit them without them breaking but never had a full on impact on them to know how they'd perform. Oh yeah, the set before last were massive and looked horrific on me but they had really good coverage and vision was spot on so put up with them for around 6 embarrassing months!
Last order was £22 for two pairs and they were probably the best ones I've had from them. Delivery is normally around a week too.
Personally I really wouldn't bother with the ones where the prescription lens sits behin a polycarbonate outer (if that makes sense). I just could not get on with mine, I think because the prescription bit is closer to the eye I found my depth perception was totally shot. I had some free prescription safety glasses from work and they were exactly the same. YMMV. My first pair were from Boots and not exactly cheap
I just wear contacts for exercise now, but I know that doesn't suit everyone.
I had some Oakley Minutes (mk1’s from many years ago) and when I started needed prescription lenses for cycling and hockey I got Cilary Blue to deglaze them with polycarbonate. I still use them for road cycling / commuting and will use them again for hockey.
However they didn’t fit well with a full face helmet, so I bought some Oakley half jackets with the cheapest lens (think I paid £70 ish from Winstanleys) and had those reglazed at the same place for about £60 ish. I’d say the glasses are great but the lens fitting could be better - because the frame is quite flexy they can pop out when you’re cleaning them. I suspect the half glazed nature is more challenging to cut in polycarbonate. They are great for riding in though - they don’t steam up like the Minutes can as hey don’t wrap around your face so closely.
I’d definitely not get glasses with a prescription insert behind another lens. Perhaps go the same route as me - find a normal sunglass frame you like and get them glazed online. Just make sure the frames aren’t too curved.
Another vote for Asda, I buy two pairs at a time one normal one sunglasses, full varifocal thinned etc for £130
