I've got a 2nd hand edge 510 on its way to me in the post already...
But I decided to go perusing other options and have noticed that bryton are still about and appear to be offering some quite impressive specs for some of their devices for (compared to garmin) relatively low prices...
I also read mixed reviews for them online so I thought I'd ask here, anyone got any experiences with bryton bike computers and if so how did/do you find them?
I used a bryton 50 for about six years... it was faultless and way ahead of similar priced competitors. Battery life was excellent, and still excellent after all that time.
They got a bad rap initialy because the website that you had to use was poor, however this is no replaced by automatic uploading via a phone app.
I replaced mine with a wahoo bolt this year, but it was a close run thing between that and another bryton.
That's encouraging to hear.
The battery life is one of the main things that is attracting me to them, that and the fact that almost all of them appear to have ANT+ so I can carry on using the same sensors...
I had a Bryton 330E for a short while this time last year and really didn't like it at all.
A lot of the plus points relied on the mobile phone app for connectivity, but the app was terrible and would barely connect to my device (on Android - I did try on my girlfriend's iPhone and it seemed better).
I did try and send it back to where I bought it, but they had a no returns policy on electronic goods so I flogged it on eBay at a £40 loss and bought a Wahoo ELEMNT bolt instead (which is great).
I wouldn't recommend one unless very very cheap. If you are considering, download and have a play with the app first. And buy from someone who'll take it back if you cannot connect, as that just doesn't meet the criteria as sold.
When you say it's reliant on the phone app I take it you mean for stuff like text/call syncing and strava segments?
If so that sort of thing doesn't really bother me, so long as uploading is smooth/reliable and battery life is as long as claimed (in excess of 30hrs for some models)...
I'll see how it goes with this (now relatively ancient) edge 510, but I can see me giving bryton 310/450/530 a go as they do everything I need on paper.
Mines great. It's a brayton rider 330, it GPS tracks very well although I find the barometer a little variable (compared to Garmins) but I don't often calibrate it.
I finish a ride, put the phone on hotspot and it uploads really quickly and syncs immediately to Strava. I never use the Bryton app unless I want to change the setup of the data fields on display during a ride.
The battery lasts as far as I can tell the claimed 35 hours (that's a lot of rides out for me!)
For £70 or whatever I paid for it, it's been good value.
I've got a basic Rider 10 for recording my rides. Works fine, connects to my android phone easily.
I used to be able to connect to Relive when I had an iPhone, now I cant do that, probably more my fault than the phone. Connects to Strava through the phone.
Only strange thing I found after going round Llandegla for the first time, you need to turn it off when you have finished a ride for it to save.
£40 when I got it, the equivalent Garmin was £100.
I had a Rider 20 and after 2 years it just died. It wouldn’t charge. The retailer pointed me in the direction of bryton who seemed to be helpful. Eventually they offered me discount off a replacement but my faith in them had evaporated.
Happy Wahoo ELEMNT bolt owner now.
well I've won a 'Rider 330' on fleabay (for about half of what I paid for the Edge 510) and so guess I will be comparing the two and deciding which to keep and which to flip on.
It's potentially an interesting little exercise (to me at least), seeing what your money get you down at the bottom/2nd hand end of the GPS head unit market?
6+ year old technology that is still arguably a bit overpriced for what it is from the "Market leader" Vs something with most of the same features (on paper) from a brand without the market presence or recognition for about half the price again...
Both are sort of being compared to the Edge 25 I've been using for the last three years or so from new... I'm looking for more battery life, more data fields, better upload/synching, set against cost of ownership and reliability. although both have in-ride phone synching and breadcrumb trail routing, I'm not too bothered about these features but I'll probably have a bit of a play just to see how I get on.
There seem to be lots of people flogging off their old GPS units at the minute, I'm guessing because the new edge 530 seems o have quite a feature updates over the 520/520+ for a pretty similar price...
I'm shopping at a much lower price point, and can't really afford to have 3 head units longer term, so I will need to compare them and then offload at least one to recoup some losses.
