Has anyone here got any experiences about this route? It's the link from the 'classic' Gap ride up from Talybont on Usk over to Trefil at the top of the Sirhowey valley, Rhymney area.
We rode it today. Well, we walked a lot of it to be honest. Lots of big drops to the side of the bridleway that would have caused a fair amount of pain if a slip occurred. Blimey- in the Beacons, on a bridleway? Who knew?
Amazing place with stunning views and a scary trail. Oh, the pub in Trefil is very good indeed.
Yeah, know it well. Not sure if I still have the KOM coming down it, which I did on my hardtail XC 29er while on an orienteering event. I was very close to going off the edge at one point but sheer speed kept me on the track. Mind you they have felled a lot of trees since then so the exposure is considerably worse now. It is a really interesting bit of landscape, well out of character for the Beacons as you say. One of my favourite loops starts at Talybont resr, goes all the way up to the top of the tramway, through the Trefil Quarries, drops down to Morlais, coffee stop on the side of the Pontstic resr, then up the gap and over the tops to Carn Pica and then back down the ridge to the start.
I've done it several times and been underwhelmed with it as a trail. One reason why I don't rate the Gap as a loop.
The standard Gap loop doesn't take in the best bit of the tramway though (which is the bit Ambrose is writing about)
Ah, I didn't realise it went up over there, I am thinking of a different bit I think.
Just realised that could be a crucial link in an epic all day Valleys classic from Cardiff.
