We're off up to Broughty Ferry next week with the kids to explore the delights of the East Neuk and Angus. I always take a bike with me with the aim of getting in a few afternoon/evening rides. Having looked at Trailforks and some recent posts on STW, it seems that the local area might be a bit lacking in decent MTB trails.
Anyone know of anything? Or would the road bike be a better bet?
Kevin
Sorry to say but road bike. Not.much mtb about Dundee. Loads in stirling, perth etc but you are a drive away.
I'm not an expert on riding that's rideable from Dundee but done a fair bit around Fife and Angus. Tentsmuir forest is quite pleasant.
Generally there is a lot of farm land which is not idea for mountain biking. A road bike or gravel type thing would be good for exploring the lanes and offroad bits.
There is some good mountain biking within an hour. Angus Glens offers some proper gnarr. Pitmedden Forest (up the back of Abernethy) has good trails, and also Lomond Hills (up the back of Falkland).
'Not much MTB about Dundee'...? Have you ever actually ridden here?
There's masses of good riding close by, just no trail centres on the doorstep. Sidlaws within a few minutes drive or a pleasant back road trundle; miles of good singletrack and some challenges, both up and down. Would take a couple of busy days to find all of it and learn your way around. Lumpy xc circuits around Glamis with good cake at the castle; Tentsmuir for a fast xc.
Kinnoul hill alongside Perth.
Craigvinean and Dunkeld DH & Enduro trails should be enough for anyone. But there's more just up the road at Pitlochry too.
Angus glens for limitless mountain rides in Clova, Prosen, Isla, Esk etc.... All of teh munros on this side of the country are rideable.
Pitmedden outside Perth for more tree roots than you'll know what to do with.
Going the opposite way, superb trails at Scolty & Drumtochty, up behind Laurencekirk.
The Sidlaws (more like 30 mins drive) are alright but the problem is hardly any trails are marked on the map so unless you have a local to show you around then it will be hard to find anything good or not get totally lost.
Tentsmuir forest is OK but if doing that then a gravel bike to ride through then on to St Andrews would be my choice.
There is also a bit between Tealing and Glamis but again about a 30 min drive
Anything else is a bit of a trek (about an hour) from Broughty Ferry
It has been 18 years since I lived there but I doubt much has changed for riding since then.
BF to Balkello woods: about 15km on cycle paths and back roads; 15 minutes by car.
Finding the trails is straightforward: go to the nearest top and look about you; the trails are well used and well built, so very easy to find. All three main summits have trails on them, with broader climbing routes and tighter, steeper descents.
Plenty more over a bit to the west, with excellent, steep stuff on Ballo hill. Choose your poison.
I suspect that maybe quite a lot has changed in the last 18 years... That I've been riding here.
Lots of trails, just no real trail centres. Major suspects all been listed, just need to be prepared to wing it a bit.
Evening rides from there would be Tentsmuir and Sidlaws, both a short car ride away. If you’re looking to ride from base a gravel bike would be ideal.
Trailforks useless round here but check out Angus Core Paths Plan map for linkable paths.
I was down that way a few weeks back. Plenty decent gravel rides.
But I've no idea where I was because I was following someone else.
Thanks everyone! Some good tips there. Sounds like the hardtail will be the bike to take! Someone in the office mentioned Tentsmuir too, so I'll go for a wee blast there, and will also try to get to Sidlaws and Balkello.
Tentsmuir maybe not for me but twenty mins further down from the bridge Ladybank woods , Falkland Estate or more gnarly but really good Pitmedden between Auchtermuchty and Abernethy, road bike along the silvery tay one side then back the other
Don't forget the NCN1 uplift :-0
On to the Tay road bridge 🙂
