Waiting my first brompton to arrive soon. Its a single speed model. Has anyone here gone through the process of changing to quick release axel, or a more minimal tensioner? Don't fancy the idea of carrying a spanner in case of flat, and the tensioner it comes with seems to big for what it is...i have managed to find skewer for the front, but not for the back (112mm spacing)

Tensioner might be too bespoke for anything other than original, but hopefully the axels are not that different..?

Not the answer you want but you can get a tool kit / wrap a spanner and poke inside frame or put 2 tubes in the tyre (swap tube without taking wheel off).

Yeap, I'm aware of the brompton toolkit, very nice piece of kit, but then it seems silly to have those nuts on the axel in the age of thru axels and qr skewers.. Even a skewer that requires Allen key would be fine really.. Just very bizzare

Interesting idea boombang I assume need to drill an extra hole in the rim for the second valve? Never had a puncture on my Brompton but would be a pretty miserable half an hour messing about in the rain if I did so a second tube sounds ideal.

Well done going single speed on the brompton, I have thought about it so post up how you get on. Since I fitted marathon + both ends I have not had a puncture but the ride is terrible.

Sorry I cannot answer the qr question but I can hardly get the m+ off in a garage with warm hands. I once tried at the roadside and could not do it. Since someone pinched my pump I don't even carry a pump now.

The chain tensioner is a brompton item I believe, mine keeps slipping loose so needs some of the non slip stuff on the bolt.

I was between two speed and single, had a go on the biggest hill I could get in Brighton with the test ride brompton on the same ratio as single speed and it was fine. I find the brompton shifters quite horrible, plus the long flying cables so was keen on single speed. I had marathon plus tires on commute bike and they were the worst tyres I used ever in terms of feel, have since changed to conti contact plus which are really great. The brompton is coming with marathon race, which I haven't tried before.
I think I'll be ordering the front skewer from sjs cycles, and figure out about the rear one down the line...

I've heard of drilling rims for second Schrader / tube or just fitting a second tube inside the tyre with valve near hole, if get puncture swap them

That sounds incredibly sketchy. I'd rather call a taxi and put the bike in the boot 😂

The tensioner takes up the slack when folded. I'm sure Brompton have the size correct.

Yeah, I had not noticed its action when folded, have scrubbed that idea. Will keep looking for ways of getting rid of the nuts though.
