Gutted to have broken my winter boots...there is a crappy bit of plastic on the lace system that has broken away from the leather. They are out of warranty, not sure how good Lake are in that respect but I need them at the end of the month.

Annoyingly I've been quite rough with the right boot as the Boa lace system had seized so would have but said part under lots of strain trying to open the boots and get my foot out. So I replaced the Boa, and then the left boot promptly broke which has had a really easy life in comparison!

So I think the best option to me is to get a leather eyelet tool and pop in a couple of eyelets, and then re-lace a new Boa through the eyelets in place of the missing plastic guide. Any opinions or better ideas?

Correct side:

Two eyelets will try to bunch the leather between them, how about a double rivet lace hook...

And do the other side to maintain balance?

not thats its any use now but....

if the lace system jams you are supposed to lift the lace off that plastic part so that you get more room to get your foot out.. Thats the reason why the lace simply sits over it rather than through as the other parts are..

Its worth knowing so that you dont break the other one.. You can also get new laces FOC from boa as they are covered by a lifetime warranty.

Thats the annoying thing gavstorie...the Boa that jammed up and needed replacing is still fine, its the side thats had an easy life that broke! And yes, Boa sent me free replacement lace kits which was great 🙂 But thanks for the tip, I didn't realise the lace could just lift out of the guide.

Josh, thanks you've got a valid point, I'll try and get a double rivet lace as suggested!

I've got for a single eyelet as I can't find any of those double eyelets from anywhere but china with a long delivery estimate, I think it will work with just a single hole for the lace to run through.

Slight hijack I have these boots...this might be a daft question but what’s the point of the flappy bit on the boots in the pics above - the bit that looks like it’s got a snowflake. It does not seem to serve any purpose to me and ends up flapping about like a very flappy thing

Actually looking at the correct side and incorrect side it looks like I may have the same issue but on both boots!

I've got my eyelets, hopefully will 'fix' them today, I'll post up a pic unless it goes terribly 🙂

Have you actually been in touch with Lakes? I found they were happy to give helpful advise about repairs in the past (stitching issue on very old 302's)

I've not tried Lake because;

1) I need them in a couple of weeks for a freezing Welsh weekend and I'd have to post them off

2) I doubt they would repair, even if they have the missing plastic replacement, it would need the boot unstitching and the part sewing back in.

3) It would be a huge waste if they chucked them away and sent me a new pair!

So, eyelet is in, looks like it will work but I reckon I'll need to replace the eyelet with a better quality 2 part version, these cheap ones just flare out behind the material plus they are not really deep enough to get through the leather and fabric.
