Went to fit a bottle cage to my merlin malt but can't get one of the bolts out as the captive nut has come loose in the frame. Now I can drill out the old bolt + nut, but how about replacing it? Is it possible?
It'll be a riv-nut, effectively a threaded rivet, most decent shops should be able to fit one for you, unless you want to buy your own (think Machine Mart do them). If you can grip the nut to remove the bolt, it can be tightened with the correct tool(or using the bolt and nut bodge).
I've replaced these before on a cannondale caad 5 frame.
It was easy enough to do using a mixture of bolts and washers to pull the rivet into place.
I think i have a load spare - i can post you a few if you like - emails in profile.
I got them on ebay and they came in bag of 10 - I only needed 1, but used a few
If it goes wrong - you drill it out and start again... just have to try and the get bits out of the frame

Correct tool £12, no struggling.
Cheers for the help! Might even be able to re-set the original one if I can get the bolt out of it I guess...
Thanks for the offer, JWH, I'll see how I get on with the original one first.
