I bust my big toe yesterday and the foot is blacking up nicely.
Since snapping my foot off I don't get much feeling in the toes anyway* so what harm can it do?
I know the standard answer to broken bones is 6-8 weeks but will riding earlier do any harm?

*Right at the moment it does throb a bit
Depends if you can avoid kicking things while riding
i recommend amputation.
Depends if you can avoid kicking things while riding - That is the problem, little spacial awareness of where my foot is unless I am actually looking at it.
i recommend amputation. - So did the first surgeon but I declined the offer
Do you want a second opinion ? - Nail on head 🙂 Bored on a teleconf
Simple answer, when it stops hurting enough to ride. If that was tomorrow that's when I'd be riding. 😀
I had my big toe fused a few years ago - so basically broken under anesthetic, bone chopped, screws put in. I was off the bike for 2 months while bone knitted. First few rides hurt a lot, even just on road with vibration.
Random thought...
If you used a solid soled clipless road shoe with a clipless pedal and moved the cleat away from your big toe, could you start riding sooner?
So what did you do this time?
You sure it's just the big toe you broke as that foot looks quite angry for just one toe
I never stopped when I broke mine, because I'm a) hard as nails and b) stupid. I did rebreak it after a few weeks, at work, because of b. But in your case, maybe reduced sensation means you need to be more careful not less?
Not so angry looking today but still painful. I guess I will use pain as a guide to riding and when the bike is repaired I will try a gentle ride.

What happened this time? not totally sure but I got to see various parts of the hospital starting with Resuss before being downgraded to Major Trauma. First time I have been rushed from triage to Resuss which was exciting.

Whatcha not telling us you car designing, hot tub jiggling, BBB wizarding clumsy fool? 😉
Claire says 6 weeks.
Honestly if I had your track record I'd take up knitting instead.

I broke my big toe a couple of years ago (abseiling on a stag do, wearing daps). It took a long time to heal. Even now, there is (slight) tenderness when bending it and swelling.
I think this is down to a) constantly load bearing on the foot, assuming you have a cast for say a week, and then a orthopaedic shoe thereafter. b) it being so far from the heart, meaning that nutrients to heal the bone have that much further to travel.
Can't remember exact timescales, but I think I was surfing 2-3 months after it happened, and mountain biking 2-3 months too. Commuting on my road bike happened while it was still healing though!
Jeepers man!!! You really are the most accident prone person alive!
In fact, how have you managed to live so long? And you managed that list on injuries engraving wood? 😉
