So me and the missus popped down to Bristol for a gig last night, scores of cyclists everywhere both on the way in (5/6pm) and on the return just before midnight.

The observation of the evening was that while there was a decent proportion of proper bikes, I reckon only 1 in 3 riders were wearing helmets and then to make it worse after dark only a fraction had lights front and back when the roads were chocka with traffic, taxis and meandering drunk students.

Darwin? I don't know, but we don't help ourselves do we - in the eyes of the 'aterz and media?

Yeah, but it's Brizzle innit. Your average stokes croft crusty or well manicured hipster ain't bothered by no helmet or lights mate.

yep also not all people on bikes are "cyclists" and as this place proves not all cyclists ride bikes 😉

Fairly sure as a student there we always forgot lights/helmets

Yeah, I get that, so perhaps title should read 'Bristol bike users'?

... these weren't all £99 supermarket bikes.

If they didn't have lights on how could you see them?

Sounds about right. I don’t wear a helmet for about 2/3 of my riding.

That's a positive. I can't understand why so many people seem to think they should be wearing a helmet when cycling but not when walking, running or anything else. A lot of people just seem to have accepted it but looks like cyclist in Bristol are not as easily led.

I was in Paris for a few days recently. None of "les cyclistes" was wearing "un casque" and no one had any "lumieres"
I didn't see anyone get killed to death and everyone was really cool and smoked gauloises all day long.
Car drivers were still aresholes though...

Most ‘not a cyclist’ commuters and utility cyclists don’t ride crap bikes. It’s generally £250-£500 hybrids. They’re not stupid, they need a bike that works well and lasts. It makes me giggle on here when people go on about their £1000+ commuter bike. It’s just a bit OTT. Most of the lads I know that ride round West London use something they’ve cobbled together from cadged parts, but is mechanically fine for the job.
