Hey everyone,

Just hopped online to sign up and the male solo field is sold out. Gutted. Not sure whether to find a pairs partner or dress up as a woman and enter the females solo.

Question: What's the best way to guarantee a place on the Big Dog Podium

Answer: Buy a fat back - nailed on 😉

I think the Retrobike category is the least represented (and cheapest to get kitted out for 😆 )

Paceman - was talking to TimP a couple of nights ago and he said you might have got your 29+ together now? Still interested in a pairs entry?

I think we shared a gazebo last year - I had the green Scandal then.

I think he is!

We are at present gazebo less at the moment - one lap it was there in all it's splendor - the next it was a mangled wreck dumped 30 yards away in a field.

Any gazebo suggestions - won't the the same without base camp!

I'd be happy to throw in some money towards one of these if people were interested?

sides could be useful if it's a bit wet...

Wwaswas,

I'm up for that, what Fatbike have you got?
I've just had a three week lay off with broken ribs and won't be fully back on it for another two weeks I reckon (clipped my bars and went OTB and hit a tree in Stanmer Woods on the Junkyard trail).

I should be fine by BigDog though and itching to go on my new Surly Krampus. I also trained for and did the full off road Coast to Coast six weeks ago so I've got some fitness built up this year. It's just for fun anyway, I'm looking forward to skinning a few trail bikes on the fattie 😀

I see we're both signed up for Solo Vets 40+ at the moment. I wonder if they'll swap us into Fatbike pairs?

Cheers

Paceman

Cool - I think it'll be fun 🙂

I'm just finishing building a Puffin.

I also trained for and did the full off road Coast to Coast six weeks ago

I rode to Sainsburys the other week when I could have driven 😉

Here's last years effort from me: http://app.strava.com/activities/73661379/laps so you know what to expect in terms of tailing off of lap times as the day goes on. I've been doing the odd longer ride recently so hopefully riding in a pair will work better in terms of consistency...

I'll have a chat with Simon - I'm sure he'll be happy to move us - there's always a waiting list for solo. Did you register with your email from your stw profile - I'll copy you in using that address, anyway.

cheers

Luke

Cheers Luke, that's a good plan, and riding as a pair sounds like it could suit both of us. I'm looking forward to seeing the Puffin in the flesh once it's built, Singular make some beautiful frames I think.

I'll forward you my BigDog entry details when I hear from you via email.

Cheers

Nathan

TimP versus Darkcyan

... the Big Dog battle begins again, only two seconds over six hours separated them last year 😉

Singlespeed - tick
Rigid - tick
Steel - tick

Will wheel size make the difference this year?

N.b.b. heard a rumour Coldean side not in the course this year - good for us Tim ;-)though Badgers may be back in - not so good!

35lb fat bikes are where it's at for a Stanmer House burger and a pint outings now.

They make you put SS's round the back with the FS bikes 😉

I seem to remember lapping you about 4hrs in last year... that's my challenge to beat 😉

...although I suspect that riding in the fat bike category for 6hrs will add enough "tough guy" for me.

TimP... 😆 😆 😆

That old chap was seriously angry about mountain bikers in Stanmer, what was it a 5minute rant??

There can only be one winner!

If my legs after 3 hours riding on Sunday are anything to go by you're already the winner...

I'm a maybe for 9am Sunday at the tea rooms.

Also will probably be riding from the upper lodges at about 18:45 tomorrow if you're not doing the BMTB awayday to Tilgate?

I do like the tag, whoever did that. Should be 'ripped lycra' though 😉

Meeting some others at the upper lodges at 6:45 so if we do tea and cake we could be there for 7. Darkcyan can you email me a mobile number (address in profile) in case there's a problem and I'll send you mine. I'll check they're happy for a slightly larger group too.

Nathan -fingers crossed for you!

DrP - not sure of your plans but I'm riding over from mine leaving at 18:00 if you want a bit of gentle XC/opportunity to watching me wheeze my way up a hill before the Stanmer singletrack? If you're driving don't park near the upper lodges - they close the car park - try and park in the uni sports hall car park and ride across.

Glad to hear you're cleared to ride Nathan!

Should be 7 in total, I think.

The Velo Cafe ride is over at Stanmer this evening so we might see them too.

Wwaswas, good advice about the car park next to the Upper Lodges, I've been caught in there before when they lock up at 7pm.

See you later, we'll be riding up Tea & Cake to meet you at 6:45,

Paceman

That mind wipe is a protective thing that a lot of people who meet you do 😉

The no shirt look he was sporting seemed like a recipe for losing a lot of skin on an off.

There seemed to be someone that knew someone at the beginning or end of every bit of singletrack last night.

It was quite spectacular, if that's any comfort. I got my worst falling off a bike injury (well other than the broken hip) coming off a cx bike on the sdw at walking pace. It seems to just be pot luck when these things happen 🙁

Paceman will be along later to offer some sympathy (although you have mine too).

Was a great ride - pace was bloody quick on the singletrack too 🙂

Hi guys,

I've tried to get route info off Morvelo but "no not yet" was the response. I guess they're still deliberating whether to return to the old, tried and tested awesomeness of the previous years or shake it up again. I've done it every year bar last and heard last year was totally different and just climbed the whole way. Shame because historically the ST was just perfect. Going up it is wrong and a tad pointless imo.

Also hoping for some good weather. Did it once in the muddiest mud ever and it wasn't easy, still a hoot though

I'll be on a new 650b Alu hardtail on racing ralphs.

They were out on Tuesday testing the route so I guess it'll be finalised in the next day or two.

This is the Singular sponsored climb;

http://www.strava.com/segments/7715040

so must form part of the route.

The fact it's not the cliff from last year (and wasn't a climb in last years route as far as I remember?) makes me hope that the route doesn't include that this time 🙂

[edit] just checked: it was part of the 2012 course.

I'm thinking of doing the big dog on my meta purely because it's tubeless even though the 29er HT is probably better suited.

I've got spare tape and a compressor if you've got some valves and want a hand setting the 29er up Tim?

I may give it another go when I have a bit more time but these on-one tyres on their rims are just so loose without a tube in.

Thanks Luke. I will probably use the boardman as it is. Will only end up tearing a tyre if I switch to a timeless set up anyway.
You will have to let me know when you're next over at stanmer and I'll come join you. See how I get on with the big wheels over there.

Does it really take an hour on those big fat tyres?

More like 2 at a comfortable pace but I was prepared to make a bit of an effort so as not to appear too slow 😉

It's probably about 45-50 minutes up through Dog Poowoods /down to Waterhall/along to Patcham/A27 bridleway/down Tea and Cake but best to add a bit of contingency/faff time too.

Meet at mine or bottom of Dog Poo woods?

Nice ride with the Stanmer Tea Room crew - trails very dry, but some trail litter spicing things up a bit.

Nice and cool in the trees.

Interesting to see the different bikes in the group - Two turner five spots - 26", two fully rigid ss (26 & 29"), a 160 mm canyon (26") and a geared 29er hard tail.

Seems the marketing guys have done their best to split the herd!

No 650b though - IMO a dead standard already!
