At the end of the STW rossy ride there was talk of riding from the Irwell brewery in Rambottom but heading the opposite way to the turbines are people still wanting to do this?
I have a route in mind - not to long or difficult with potential stings in the tail depending on if people want to take them
Was thinking of 29 jan or 5th feb
Thoughts please
G
G,
Isn't the 5th the day after HTN??
Could be up for the 29th..
I might be up for this (sure a few of the boggies would be up for it again too)
not sure Nick maybe the 12th would be better g
As long as you don't make it the 18/19 Feb, count me in. 🙂
I can do the 29th. HTN is indeed on the 4th. And everyone knows that if you're on here regularly and live in the north west, then HTN is compulsory! Otherwise Harry the spider goes to work on you with a pair of pliers and a blowtorch! 😯
Or does he come round dressed only in a thong and a feather boa, and tickle you to death with a ken Dodd tickling stick?
It one or the other.
God I hope it's the blowtorch!
Bump for the bored IT workers
Who's up for this then? We could do a route up the rake > pilgrims cross > over Holcombe moor > pickup the Witton Weavers to Darwen > loop over Darwen Moor with some ... ahem... "cheeky"* stuff, then a loop back via entwistle, back over Holcombe > finishing with the descent through Buckden woods for a well earned pint in the brewery
Was that what you were thinking justme?
*pending receiving written permission from Lowey to ride on his land
Pic a date and time and I'll stick it in my calender
29th Jan? It might have dried out a bit up there by then. Possibly. It was an ickle bit muddy up there on Sunday
Dried out! Unlikely. Expect to be covered in goo.
I think we can safely bank on it being pretty wet. The route I'm thinking its not too bad. It'll be a bog-fest over Holcombe Moor and some sludge-swimming on some points over towards Darwen. But other than that we should be ok really. Its surfaced of sorts. Well... we may not sink without trace 😀
The general paln was to head through Nuttall park to Summerseat ,round the back of Turton Tower to Cadshaw woods , back along the bridleway ,through the cattery to the strawberry duck , round the res, up Crawthorne Rd , round the bridleway down to the stream and back around moor road to the top of robin hoods, down into irwell vale and along the lines back into rammy .There may be some variations depending on conditions etc
Sounds good to me fella. I defer to your superior navigational knowledge of the area. Are we saying the 29th then?
29th would suit me best out of the 2 original dates. 12th also doable.
Cheers
Pick a date soonest and let me know so I can try and book babysitters. I'm also up for a full on sesh in the brewery followed by a slow pootle home if we can get there with a bit of time to spare. Failing that how about a few in the Hare and Hounds ?
G, Sorry I didnt call you back over xmas... had a bit of an emergency with the kids.
Binners: Darwin may just be getting to far away if there's a big group. There's some stuff around Holcombe and we can split the group at Buckden if we want and meet at the bottom.
Lowey: could use my settee if a skinfull ensues:) T
the MOD singletrack is some of the best around
Cheers Goatster, but we will in all probability get a lift over to the start point with, do the ride, have a skinful the meander home. Its not far back to Bolton! Can we aim to be back at the pub for about 2ish ?
I might be free that weekend but I'm not doin the steps of DOOM! 😯
I might be free that weekend but I'm not doin the steps of DOOM!
chicken 😆
i'll be up for this feb would be better for me.
bastids.................i hope it rains on you all 😉
Isn't it compulsory to have to have a video, posted on here, of someone failing catastrophicly to clean the steps of DOOM. With pictures of the resulting carnage.
Lowey - there's a spare room here if you get too... Ahem... Wobbly. If we're feeling up for it we could do the brewery > the Major > the Fusilier > the H & H? Just a thought! actually that's pretty dangerous! There's a bike shop across the road and I'll just have been paid. That's never going to end well! 😳
StePs of doom are compulsory unless you are gay
That'll get me banned
Lowey - there's a spare room here if you get too... Ahem...wobbly
There'll be another 2 besides lowey 😉
I'll be joining you - along with Lowey..... BUT whats all this "Steps of Doom" sh*t! Wooooahhhh.... steps..... Pic?
With 10 pints down you you'll fly down em! (face first)
The ever-so-slightly-slippy steps of DOOOOOOOOOM
and what they did to Plumbers front wheel first time out
What you can't see from the vid is that there's no run-out at the bottom, just a narrow bridge over the river, at a weird angle. Its very off-putting as you can't carry any speed or you'll be going over the fence, then face-first into the water from a fair height!
its all got a nice coating of green slime and the bridge have old iron railings to knock your teeth out!
Did the steps do that to his pants too ?
For the record, the only steps I'll be attempting are the ones into the pub. I have a big problem with steps from past painful experience.
Steps of Doom, aka Jacobs Ladder down into Nuttall Park. They aren't really on route - a short detour would solve that - but don't worry I have some very steep muddy, techy singletrack to entertain the David Bailey's amongst us. lowey you have had a taster in the summer, its wet now!!
Goatster aka Justme's handsome brother Tony.
BTW SoD are really green and slimey and very muddy above them at the mo 🙂

Alreet T!
I used to live in Garden Street in the brick houses in Summerseat. Batchelor bliss it was; I did some of my best ever Egyptian PT in that cottage.

29th is good for me.
29th it is 0930 at the brewery for a 100 start (at the latest
G
Are we planning to ride up the Rake to start? If so, I'll meet you at the Shoulder. I'm not coasting down the bloody evil thing, to turn round and ride back up it again! I HATE that climb! Its the work of Satan! 👿
Is there parking ? postcode ?
Par Cark right next to it Lowey. Postcode is BL0 9YQ. Not driving are you?
No, not driving. Worst case scenario is we cycle over, ride, drink, wobble home. Best case is get a lift there, ride, drink wobble home.
Babysitter booked!
At very least Me and Toss will be in attendance. Just trying to twist Wors' arm but he's a big bastard.
Think the plan was to head off through Nuttall Park, Greenmount to start...
I'll be there, is the parking still free on the Railway Station car park ?
reet, im in. Steps of doom will be renamed steps of boom after i've been down em!!
I'll inform the emergency services!
If we're heading through Nutall Park then we could well be starting with the Steps of DOOM. That leaves time for a quick trip to Bury A&E to get your face stitched up - the queues shouldn't be too bad at that time on a Sunday - then back in time to meet everyone else in the pub 🙂
Graeme - you should be able to park right next to the Brewery

I didn't think it was that bad 🙂
You coming out to play then Russ? Seeing as the rake was such a breeze last time, I feel sure you'll be itching to have a go at the Steps of DOOOOOOOOOOM 😉
Looking forward to this one but not the steps. I don't like steps. Orrible things...... So, I'll be shamelessly pusshing down these - alongside Lowey 😳
I don't normally mind steps. But then my approach* tends to be point it down the middle, close my eyes, and stay off the brakes.
And that's just going to end horribly! In hospital. Probably! It won't be the first time 😳
* I won't embarrass myself by using the word 'technique'
Right oh Binners, I'll try there first, not as far to carry the baked goodies after the ride then 😉
Did someone mention baked goodies?
Will there be women?
You coming out to play then Russ?
Indeed. Start the new Job next week. More weekends off from now on! (don't mind steps but narrowness combined with steepness messes with my mind 😳 )
Does that mean there will be Lancashire bhaji's Graeme? 🙂
You coming along Bunnyhop? Bring a touch of civility to proceedings?
Binners, the Lancashire Bhaji's have evolved slightly, now they come with chili's and peppers in , think "Mexican" style 😛 , and some extra chocolatey type thing for Bunnyhop and others with a sweet tooth or two 😉
Hopefully - Happy New year Binners and Bagpuss. You coming along Bunnyhop? Bring a touch of civility to proceedings?
We've both had colds, so need to get some riding in before attempting a group ride. A fruit based drink for me please (no alcohol though as I don't drink).
You coming along Bunnyhop
Tandem ???
Hope so, be nice to see you and Jules again!
Cheers Bunnyhop! And the same to you and NBT. It'd be great to have you along. Bagpuss isn't riding, but she's going to come and meet us afterwards.
There's not many can resist the lure of Graeme's Lancashire Bhaji's. And I can't wait to taste the new Mexican ones. Might have to do a bit of baking myself. Or enlist the girls to do it for me.. They're good!
Is it tandem friendly? I know some of the route really well, other bits no sure about.
Not really Jane thre are bits that are very tight on the optional bits that you may not fancy but I'm fairly sure Jules will want a bash at G
Steps of DOOOOOOOOOOOM on a tandem? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Its an interesting approach. You'll breeze 'em on the Turner Jane 😉
To those obsessed with steps we are not going down them but we will pass by so those who wish to can push up and ride down tho the point of doing is lost on me - we have slippier and poss steeper bits available towards the end for those who wish to go that way (not compulsory) but not quite as steep as the bit tony took lowey down in the past which can only be described as ****in steep - its thankfully not really ridable at the mo G
Mmmm if we take the tandem I'm sure Lowey will love being stoker down the steps of doom. He screamed like a banshee around a short section of Delamere forest when Jules took him for a spin 🙂
😳 Guilty as charged 😆screamed like a banshee
Are we sure the Brewery is actually open on a Sunday ?
Yip! Tis indeed sir. Pint of Mad Dogs?
The brewery is open thursday to sunday inclusive but no riff raff or hawkers. Its about 100yeards from my house if anybody needs changing / getting warm facilities .
Well, I'm going under the knife on the 26th, so I'll have to give it a miss.
I can never make these rides. S'not fair.
where is the nearest train station to the brewery.
anyone know
A local will correct me but I think Bury will be your nearest station.
Cant you get the misses to pick you up ?
Bury is just a metro stop now. No trains. I reckon the nearest is Bromley Cross. You could always get to Bolton and join the Lord Lowe Bolton posse on their jaunt over
there is a steam train from bury to rammy , stops about 100 yards from the brewery but i think its quite dear .otherwise if you could get to bury I could pick you up there
you riding again ton?
May be able to do something to get you from tod would have to be nice to raine to get you back tho G
Can't make this now as I have party duties. 😐
Have a good un 8)
Silly me - when is the actual ride and what time please?
Just for you Jane 29th jan 0930 at the brewery in rammy xx G
fella's, i was just thinking about bringing the leccy bike over for a pottle by myself, the joining you for a schooner or 2 after your ride.
i might have a lift sorted.
we'll try to make it over, I had problems with my wrists this weekend that the nurse reckons is tendonitis - hope it calms down by the weekend so I can get out
