As a general rule of thumb, about shoulder wide is a good compromise. Big enough for good handling, but not too big to be unwieldy.
TBH, I find it more important that they have a nice upsweep at the extremities. Much more responsive, and i think far more aesthetically pleasing too. Those that droop down are for wierdos in odd clothing.
