I want to order a Brand X dropper post 125mm external. I have a 2013 Giant Anthem X 29er which has 3x9 gearing. It says it will not work with x2 or x3 set ups, but I am not convinced, can I just have to move it along the handlebar (towards the centre) more, ok not ideal but I see no reason why it would not fit ?

I moved the front shifter towards the centre, I use the dropper more than the shifter.
Works fine, gears slightly awkward but as I say, dont use it often.

Specialized also do one. I have one somewhere in the garage and an external routed dropper to go with it that's surplus to requirements

Rode with a guy the other week who had managed to squeeze a brand x “1x” lever next to a front shifter so that both were useable. Looked like he’d positioned the dropper remote up out the way. They are very adjustable and can be fitted in loads of positions. I’ve got one alongside a pop lock remote.
Try it and see. The other style are less intuitive to use- I had one on a Hilo and swapped it for a modded shifter.

I ran a 1x Brand X dropper lever on top of the bars when running 2x below. it was fine if a little exposed in a crash.

The first review on that page says "The lever clamp fitted nicely under the front changer display".

I just run them on the RH side above the bars. As Winston says, bit exposed in a crash, but if it breaks, I'll buy a 2x lever.

Hi OP, I just bought a brand x external that came with the 2/3x lever that you run next to your shifters, I wanted the 1x lever so I bought one. Got the other lever spare and unused if you're interested?
