You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Literally 2 hour old ladies Specialized Ariel Elite D 15 stolen from bike rack at Charles St, Edinburgh Uni, between 6-9pm Friday 23rd Jan. Black with turquoise blue upper bar and hand grips. Also has black mudguards and back cateye light attached to seat rod. Waited months for this beautiful lightweight bike which I bought with a special grant I received to give me a treat and help make life easier as an unpaid carer for someone with Alzheimer's. Would be so happy to get her back!! Uni security and police tell me there's a gang of 12 and 13 year old boys in grey tracksuits running riot with bike thefts in last 12 months in Edinburgh, but since they are so young they can do nothing to stop them! Thanks so much for any tips or leads, Ganga
It'll be in the muirhouse area. Wee pricks are trying to take over the City but you're not allowed to kill the wee bastard oxygen thieves.
Damn. That's really s***. Chances of getting it back are sadly slim. 🙁 Had you at least recorded the frame number to give to the police? If they do turn it up, it's the easiest way to prove your ownership. If not, the shop may have a record of it.
Got to be worth keeping an eye on gumtree, e-bay, local cash-converters and the like.
Bad reason for a first post, but welcome to the forum anyway.
Thankyou, I'm also sad to be making a debut like this! Yes, luckily I still had the frame number since it was on the receipts for the bike, still in my bag. Didn't even make it home!
Just to reiterate - check out Gumtree. Girl at work had her bike nicked, and the scrote that stole it put it up for sale on Gumtree along with nine other bikes on the same day. Muirhouse area. And sadly the police were so useless she didn't get it back and they didn't arrest him - even though there was evidence!!!
Go tell the shop, maybe they can work something out with Specialized for you.
Hope you get it back but once again for the benefit of others DON'T LEAVE YOUR BIKE UNATTENDED ON A BIKE RACK FOR THREE HOURS
That is awful, sorry to hear this 🙁
I have had 3 bikes stolen in Edinburgh in the 90's... broke my heart.
The lessen is, never ever ever leave any even slightly decent bike outside, anywhere, at any time, in Edinburgh. Always inside with you, no matter what.
If you need city transport, get a £80 beater.
Again though, sorry to hear this.
Thankyou so much for your support. I am sorry to be so naive, but I honestly didn't realise there was any danger leaving a bike chained up with a decent lock in a well lit area in a cctv zone! Nikk could you please tell me what an 80 pound beater is. Quirrel I have already told the shop. They didn't mention anything about taking it further with Specialized. On what basis could I suggest trying to take it further would you suggest?
I think he/she means you might be able to get a discount on a replacement if its not insured.
If you have contents insurance it might be worth checking it might be included even if it was stolen away from your home.

The cheapest (and cheapest looking) bike that you can find that works. If it gets nicked then you wright it off.

Yep, just not worth doing, the scrotes know how not to be seen on the CCTV and decent locks are never that decent (unless it weighs close to the weight of the bike)
Thats rubbish news.
I have several friends who have lost dozens of bikes over the years, most of which have been stolen from pretty secure garages, one of them had close to £10000 worth of bikes stolen over night while he was in the house!
The sad news is, if they/the pieces of shit want something, almost nothing you can do will stop them, only slow them down.
I bought myself a £25 run around from Gumtree, and thats the only bike that I will lock up outside. If someone does steal it, then I wont be to bothered about it, as long as they don't knacker the lock because thats worth more than the bike.
As others have said, keep an eye on Gumtree/ebay for your bike, and get yourself into some of the second hand bike shops around Edinburgh as they sometimes try and sell them in there and the guys who work in the shops are quite used to spotting dodgy deals, and I know people have got their bikes back that way.
I must be lucky, been locking bikes up in Edinburgh for 27 years (rarely in this scenario), not one theft.
Was it a U lock or a motorbike style chain lock?
since they are so young they can do nothing to stop them!
If the Police say that then it's time to write to the chief constable.
age of criminal responsibility is 8 but the age at which a child can be prosecuted is 12 years in Scotland. under 12 they get a social worker
Bike lock an Abus 105393584080Steel-o-Flex. I showed them in shop when picking up bike and they said D lock would be best, but it was a good brand I should be OK. But also said no lock can keep out determined theives. I did take out an insurance 10 minutes before dropping it off. Hoping they will come through, but in mean time trying all I can to track it down. Thanks so much for all your support and input. Sorry to all those with similar and worse tails of injustice and woe! 🙄
I have this lock:
How easy is it for the little ***** to break this lock?
It is really heavy but must put the thieves off if you have a good lock and an old bike.

Piece of piss if you know how to use Google:

The Golden Rule is, never leave anything locked up that is worth more than the lock!
