[Closed] Brakes squeaking issues? Shimano SLX

Well usually I manage to sort out any issues with brakes but this one's not going away!

Shimano SLX M675, all in good shape. Every time I go to ride it the brakes, more noticeably the rear, feel like and make a horrible noise like it's a rubber brake. Pads seem to be glazed over - Shimano Resin pads, Shimano SLX discs. So I clean the discs, sand the pads and it's fine for the ride, but next time I go to use it I'm back to the squealing and have to repeat the process.

No evidence of leaking calipers but I'm wondering if that's the problem, remember reading a while ago about some people having leaking calipers with Shimano brakes. Is there any way I can test this as there's no leaks I can see?

Or, anything else? I'm very careful about oils and sprays near discs.

Odd. Doesn't sound like a fluid leak to me. Contamination from something when you're out for a ride? That's a big of a long shot but it's all I've got.

Had this happen on SLX and XT brakes. I'm CONVINCED there is a fundamental problem with Shimano resin pads.

Changed to Superstar Artic pads and the problem instantly resolved. ever had an issue since.

Don't think it's from something on the ride. Riding and braking hard usually sorts it out, it's when I haven't used it for a few weeks.

Thanks for the links, interesting as it seems common on these series of Shimano brakes. Not had it with the older M665 I've got. The MTBR thread is very similar to the issues I'm having.

Doing a 20 mile ride tonight so might put some tissue in the calipers and leave it for a while to see if there's any evidence of leaking.

Was having exactly the same issues with a rear SLX on a Kona Process. The guys at the shimano tech tent at tweedlove a couple of weeks back fully re bled it but the squealing and lack of bite didn't go away, a set of nuke proof pads seemed to fix it on the day, but saying that I haven't ridden it since...

Weirdly though, I put the rear brake from my hardtail (Acera level) which had been working fine as a back up on the Process, back on the hardtail and that is now doing the same thing along with another Deore rear. Like you say there seems to be some fundamental flaw with shimano brakes....

How are you cleaning the rotors? I find mine work better the muddier they are, the dirt acts as kind of like a natural sand paper/cleaner. Oh and I agree with the pad comments above, I use discobrakes now.

interesting. Now that you mention it, I've never had a problem with my metallic SLX. But my resin Deore are often squealing (but never as bad as my old Avids!!!).

Clean the rotors with IPA. Did a quick wipe over this morning and sanded the pads and it was ok. But, had to do the same last time I rode it which was about 3 weeks ago. Just seems to be this set.

I have this problem. It happens on different wheels on different bikes. I have tried many things including taking the pads out after each ride until I ride again. I end up cleaning the whole lot every couple of weeks. Infuriating.

I've never thought about the pad material, I generally run resin so I will put some sintered in and see what happens.

I got to the point of taking the pads out, burning them over the cooker flame and cleaning the rotors with IPA. they worked on the ride. I then took the pads out of the calipers and kept them in the house. When i put them back in for the next ride, they did exactly the same thing. It MUST be a problem with the pads.
