I've got a Specialized Crave Comp 2015 and the brake pads have worn out after just 45 miles down to the metal which is appalling.
I don't know what type of brake pads to order that are compatible with this bike. I've fitted brake pads on my other bike, I just don't know what type to order for this one. On the specs it says the brakes are "Shimano Deore, hydraulic disc, dual piston, resin pads". Anyone know which pads I need please?
Have a look at the identification chart here:
Superstar
At a guess it'll be s1 or s2.
It says S1/S2/S3 are all Shimano Deore. The only clue on the bike specs for my bike is that the brakes are Shimano Deore. How can I tell which one it's supposed to be?
Remove a pad and see what shape matches on the chart I guess!
The brake pads look closest to an S2 to me
The website only gives the option for Organic for the S2 pads. Is organic going to last long? I don't want a repeat of the original pads which were a waste of time and worn out after such as short distance, it was beyond appalling
If you've gone off the link above that's because I'd already pre selected organic.
If you go here Superstar you can select organic, kevlar or sintered.
Organic generally have a shorter life but better feel, I find.
But not 45 miles to metal, they were either faulty from the start or it was and incredibly tough/muddy/gritty ride!
Sounds like the pads hadn't been bedded in before the first ride.
Plus in winter I generally avoid organic pads for exactly the reasons you've found.
I'd recommend sintered pads in winter / cruddy conditions. You get practically the same braking power, but less wear than organic.
Depends on riding conditions really.. I run ss organic pads regardless, I generally get about 700km out of them and I ride in mud and rain a lot.
Thanks, I'll give them a try.
On my other mountain bike it has done over 2000 miles and I've only changed the brake pads twice (one of those being very recent). I couldn't believe it when the pads had gone on the Crave when it had only done 45 miles. It was in muddy weather though and I had forgot to put a front mud guard on it, but you'd still never expect that.
