I need to buy some brake pads for the first time in the UK and need some advice on compounds.
If my riding is mostly going to be muddy North Shrops or Llandegla and North Wales.
What hard wearing compound would you recommend for a 100% lightweight jey boy crosscountry monkey?

Kevlar superstar for only thirty bob , works for me (thirty bob reflects a low amount of money, not the actual pre decimalisation amount which is equivalent to 50p)

50p is ten bob http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Ten%20Bob

Sintered for wet and gritty stuff, imo.

Kevlar are longer lasting than Organic but the wet and grit of Shropshire/Wales will destroy them. I looked into Kevlar for mine but as I ride mainly in The Peak, I was advised to stick with sintered.

Each to their own though, eh

I've been really impressed with the ssc Kevlar pads for the last year or so in and around the peaks. However, lubes hope brakes came with organic. The rear ripped through these in no time so I fitted hope sintered. They work just as well as the organics did but will last a lot longer. I think it can also depend on what brakes and rotor sizes you're running.

See those SS kevlar pads - Jeez they squeal in the wet. The only thing that squeals louder than my front SLX / kevlar : it's my rear SLX / kevlar.

OK - the pads last forever and work well. But I've died of embarrassment long before the pads die. Think foghorn decibels.

SS organic last 2 summers. SS sintered last at least one winter. Fantastic value. Others seem fine with kevlar though - maybe it's a caliper / rotor combination thing?

I thought the Peaks were grittier than this part of the world.
Thanks for the info.

Yeah I'm sure they are, but its still gonna wear the pads quicker. Just imo

With SS prices a set to 'try' them in your neck of the woods wouldn't break the bank.

I've decided to try some sintered from SS and see how we get on.
Thanks all.

Thing with sintered is, it's not likely to go drastically wrong on you (well, unless they cause your brakes to boil over up an alp or something). Whereas the other ones might be better, or, you might wear a set out in half a ride because your local mud is made of diamond shards or tungsten carbide or whatever the hell the magic peaks dirt is. So it's a safe bet.

I really rate the kevlars but then I don't often face evil brake-destroying mud, our mud is soft and gentle and kind on your hands. I bet I wouldn't say the same if I did.
