You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Heading to BPW in September and never been before, probably looking to stick to the reds but wondered what the best tyre choice would be? so as most of you guys seem to have been what would you say works well there?
TBH i'd just go with whatever my usual tough combo is, i've only seen 1 of us puncture there over the years. I run WTB Trail Boss usually these days, but i've run Smorgasboards and others i've probbably forgotten. Sure, if you're a DH God you may want a dual Minion or something, but for most it's overkill. It's not a puncture prone place IMO
I've been there twice - once in the wet and once in the dry. No punctures either time.
Had Nobby Nics the first time and Mountain King 2 2.4" black chillis the 2nd time. Hard to compare given the different conditions but I was flying on the mountain Kings. Neither set of tyres struggled for grip there though - - and the Nobby Nics struggled in the wet at some other trail centres. BPW blues and reds must therefore be fairly grippy I would say.
you'll defo need tyres, take two.
🙂
It doesn't matter.
Not flimsy XC ones (you'll pinch flat), not dual-ply DH ones (unnecessarily slow) and not mud tyres. Otherwise anything will work, preferably with more turning grip on the front and faster on the back.
I went for the first time a few weeks ago, and it was dry - DHF MaxxTerra 2.5 on teh front and Slaughter on the back. Worked really well, was never really wanting for grip, except for some of the fast loose corners, but I don't think anything could really grip much better there!
Mate went with Magic Mary/Minion SS combo and had no complaints either.
CGG sums it up. I just use my default minions. The blues are all trail center style hard pack the reds and blacks are a little more natural.
Went last Friday, nice and dry. Ran a DHR2 super tacky front, Griffin super tacky rear...oodles of grip and no issues with rolling speed.
Would be interesting to try a 'normal' tyre combo next time as an experiment.
Really round ones work best.
super light rocket rons
Something minioney would be grand, unless it's been really wet and you want to go on the less heavily constructed blacks as they can get pretty skitey. But for everything else, fine.
Can't remember what I had on when I broke my wheel, something not tough enoigh!
Where I live there's basically no rocks, it's just mud and roots, so I run low pressures. Coupled with the fact that BPW trails are fast and flat out rather than tight and technical, I managed to flat on my first few trips. I still use the same tyres as I normally ride, just with 5 or so psi more now.
The surfaces at BPW are for the most part grippy in most conditions. I've been there when its been v wet and when it was damp, I just rode whatever and made sure they were pumped up a bit more than usual to prevent snake bites.
My main problem was discovering my rear brake pads had worn a lip on them due to the rear wheel not being all the way in the dropout, after 3 runs! 😯
It's a bike park, so, Minions.
Personally I run whatever is on the bike, usually a Mary upfront and Dampf on the back. Snakeskin, works all year round. My mate sees to absolutely destroy his Maxxis tyres around there (we ride BPW allot) It really does depend on what trail you are riding there as to how harsh it is on tyres.

Not true...!
Last two times it was a Mary up front (TrailStar?) and an Exo HR2 out back. Next time it'll likely be Shorty 3C up front, Exo DHR2 out back.
