I look at that picture and envy the pointing, lust after the block paving but also click that's a gravel drainage channel, so I feel like I'm learning a bit and all is not lost.

Nice thing in the way though.

What's the depth of the gravel drainage channel? And more importantly, where is it draining to?

I've always referred to them as French Drains

Doesn't it just drain through sub base into the ground? Oh god don't tell me they have to have a fall too!

Well, I kinda think that it's better to direct the water somewhere else than adjacent to the foundations. Something like a 6" dai plastic drain pipe with slits cut into the top and led away. Might not be necessary, probably depends upon type of local soil, so the drain pipe in clay soil. Maybe...
