Evening all,

Frustratingly the first couple of NDS BB threads on a project bike are knackered so BB not engaging.  Any tips or tricks to help?  Worried about cross threading. Tried to 'clean' the threads using a sharp pick but still not helping.

Is it a case of a thread tap?  DIY-able or LBS?  If it is a DIY job does anyone near Redditch have one i could borrow (hopefully briefly)?

Thanks

Chris

I’d not risk that - take it to an LBS with a reputable workshop. Decent BB taps are not cheap!

It is a quick and easy job with the right tools (the drive side tap and handles hold everything in line to fix the nds). I've got the tools but not near you so would suggest just lbs it.

I've managed to make a plausible tap in the past by taking a sacrificial BB and cutting a slot in it, perpendicular to the threads.

You can then gradually turn it in, chasing out the threads.

Worked for me because it was just paint on an Alu frame I wanted to clean out. If it's a steel frame I don't imagine this will succeed.

Thanks all. Thought about the sacrificial BB and threading through from the DS. Might see if LBS can help this morning.

You'll not be able to thread through because they're opposite threads.

I see you said you tried cleaning the threads with a pick, but I found it quite remarkable at how gummed up BB threads can get, I thought mine on an alu frame were borked a few months a go and was just about ready to take it to the lbs to have them tapped but thought i'd have one last go at cleaning them, I used a wire brush disc attachment on a dremel type tool with plenty of GT85 to lubricate and flush, 5 minutes of that and a wipe out and the new BB went in as smooth as can be, maybe worth a try.
