Hi all
apologies as I know this topic his been covered many times but I’m still confused about my options.
i am wanting to upgrade my wife’s Specialized Hardrock to a 1x10 setup but the front triple chainring is one of those cheap ones I can’t swap out the chain ring for.
So I need new cranks. I’ve measured the B.B. and it’s a 118mm spindle (68mm she’ll). Looking online for replacements, it’s fair to say there are none (recommendations welcome)! Everything I look at is for 113 or 122 (JIS square taper).
First thoughts, is it best to go one way or the other (113/122) and keep the existing B.B., or should I replace the B.B. as well? If so, should I go 113 or 122? Or does it not matter which of these I go for as the end result will still give me a 45-50mm chainline due to the fact that the cranks are specific to the B.B.??????
Halfords do a VP 118 bb, ok not Shimano, but cheap enough to be disposable.
Have you got a link?
To be clear, it’s a 118 compatible crank (with 104bcd bolt holes) that I’m after to be able to keep my existing B.B.
Apologies they do a Shimano one online as well, the VP one was what they seemed to have in store when I needed it last week.
Only half read sorry it's the cranks you need not bb
The stock B.B. will be a cheap nasty thing.
I’d get a used Shimano hollow tech 2 crank set and external bsa B.B. deore slx or used xt etc.
Will be lighter and easy to get rings for
ls it a square taper set up? I think that some of the Shimano groupsets still use Octalink.
-- Edit --
It looks as if it's only some cranks in the Alivio line up that use Octalink.
Octalink is a different B.B. to square taper and if changing the B.B. you might as well go external

Just checking if the OP's wife's setup was square taper or Octalink but I can see from the post that it's square taper (must have missed that when I read it through).
Would agree that a replacement chainset & BB would probably be simplest.
