Looking at going with a bottle and pack over the winter and the old cage I have has lots its grip.
Ideally, a bottle with a flappy type cover over it and a good strong cage.

What's recommended?

Camelbak Podium bottle with a Camelbak "Mud Cap". They may have killed water bottles for some MTBers but they also make the best bottles by far.

Bontrager RXL Carbon Bottle Cage, use them on 3 different bikes and never dropped a bottle or broken a cage (oldest ones are about 5years old). They do a plastic "RL" cage which is almost as good. Whatever you do don't buy alloy cages, they fatigue\wear through\bend and don't hold bottles well.

If its a metal cage just bend it closed a bit.

Post number 33 of that thread shows what I used to do. I am not the author of that post.

For a less fancy version any elastic band will do.

Bottles with cak flaps are a pain. A crud guard or any other downtube guard will keep most of the muck off a bottle nozzle. The plastic elite cages are particularly good.

Halfords do a very good one - Corsa Elite and it comes in a couple of different sizes. I think the 550ml cost me £4 or £5.

Camelbak podium with a mud cap for my underslung bottle. I use an old specialised alu cage that's had a slight squash, run the same bottle and cage on my FS bike (underslung again) and I'm yet to have the bottle pop out accidentally.

Lezyne bottle cages are really snug.

Bottle - Elite Corsa, some come with caps.
Cage - Elite Ciussi, add some grip tape for even more security.

I picked up some basic bottles from Halfords with a clip over plastic cover. They were on clearance for £2 each. Saw me through last winter till now.

I use them with a Spesh E cage on 1 bike and pdw cages on others. The basic Spesh cage is a really snug fit.

Edit to say:
These bottles

I can vouch for the Bontrager RL cages. Haven't had a bottle fall out in 12 months. Also don't mark bottles half as much as metal ones.

The side-loading specialized cages seem to hold onto stuff very well and I prefer that mechanism.

2nd the Decathlon suggestion - you can nudge open the 'flappy bit' with your chin quite easily en-route to your bouche.
