Hi,

Anybody know where to buy bottle cage bungs?

My Boardman road carbon has crossed threads in the bottle cage holes on the down tube (thanks Chinese factory worker) and I need a pair of bungs.

Was fitting an extra cage and the bolt struggled to come out and almost got stuck - luckily it fell to bits as I was dreading the worst - what the heck was it made from? Magnesium?! New bolt won’t screw in.

Take it to a bike shop, get it mended, fit extra cage.

What he said.

If the threads can't be re-tapped then the current rivnuts need drilling out and new ones fitted. Most shops will have a rivnut tool and rivnuts (that's the easy bit), the more fun bit is drilling them out in carbon frames. They are normally aluminium and are perfectly durable, it might be the threads weren't cut too well in yours or the bolts threads weren't great.

Sounds like an option as long as it doesn’t damage the carbon frame.

Using on the turbo but in the summer an extra bottle would be great.

Another thing to check when buying new bikes.

+1 for getting the threads chased.

It's highly likely that this will fix the issue, and it only takes a few minutes

Removing dead rivnuts is one of the few jobs that I still get nervous about especially with a nice carbon frame.

If you get a shop to replace it just make sure they get the bits out from inside the frame

Just ordered some rubber dust covers...

Will get the rivets fixed but discovered that someone put the fireplace on with my bike in front of it...

Sometimes I wish I was not related to my parents or never let them stay with my bike in the lounge...

I've got the M5 threaded rivets if you want some ( had to buy a big bag at the time of doing it )
Similar to these.

https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/laser-tools-nut-rivet-set-40-pieces/?da=1&TC=GS-040235869&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIr6ThnumY2QIVx4KyCh2v9QLxEAQYBCABEgJTmPD_BwE

I had to replace them on an old cannondale ally frame..
Once i drilled them out and finally got the peices out of the frame i just put these in - then using a bolt and a nut i tightend these up into the frame.

There is a special tool which can also be used to put them in.

Silicone Tidds will do the job if they're still available, although having looked at the website I think it''s changed hands!

can you helicoil a rivnut or is there not enough depth to the material?

would avoid having to drill the old ones out, and potentially having the back half of it rattling round inside the frame (unless its the one on the seat tube)

Can you leave it in front of the fire till it get hot enough to soften the metal then fit a new bolt? Might want to borrow your mum's oven gloves so you don't burn your hands.

Helicoiling a rivnut sounds ridiculous.

If it gets drilled out just make sure the "inside" has somewhere to go or it'll rattle around.

This. Quick job, take it to the LBS. If you don't want a bottle cage put electrical tape over the hole. Simple.

Here’s what arrived.  Tidbits.  Couldn’t find anywhere but online in Germany!

Guess they didn’t take off but bought an extra pair.
