ok, after always using bags/camelbaks since forever i have never used a bottle cage.

I'm basically looking to buy one - and would like some advice. After seeing about 2000 bottles spread everywhere on last years mountain mayhem final (very bumpy) descent I'm not too confident on just selecting one myself to find I've picked a duffer and my bottle has disappeared somewhere on my ride.

Any recommendations for under £20?

and are side entry cages any good? or only to be used if frame size limits the use of traditional style ones?

Bontrager plastic ones here too.

Don't get a cheap metal one- they often break at the bends and as you pull the bottle out they open up slightly, gradually loosening their grip on the bottle.

Side enty cages are crap! You will lose bottles. I use Tacx Tao bottle cages

There's doesn't look much too them, but I regularly put my (quite substantial)lumi light battery in mine while night riding, and I've never had an issue

Haven't lost, or even come close to losing a bottle with this one. Here

I use Taos on my road bike, they're very good. Had a Tao Carbon, but that didn't last as long.

Used Bonty Race X Lite Carbons on the MTB, which weren't bad.

Now use a Mt Zoom Ti which is excellent - you can bend it to make it as tight as you want, although I've never dropped the bottle. Doesn't mark them as much either.

Sweet baby Jesus! I've just had a look at the price of the Tao carbon. EEK! 70 notes on CRC!!

I bought the missus a silver carbon one, for a bit of bling to match her bike. £15 from the LBS bargain bin! Complete with bottle. Result! 😀

Best ones I've used (out of about 10 different types) are the Planet X carbon ones. Tight grip yet easy to take the bottle out/put it back.

Yeah I didn't (quite) pay that much. It was good, looked pimpy, but gritty bottles wore the carbon out below the lower bolt hole and it broke. Took a couple of years, but was heavier than plenty of other carbon cages. Wouldn't bother again.

Prefer clear ones myself, you can see what you have left. High 5 are nice, but reasonably small, or Specialized.

Blimey, the price of some of the bottle cages you guys are talking about!! Blackburn comp for me (c.£4 ) and have to say I'd have been gutted if I'd paid more for a cage after seeing how badly worn mine were after Kielder! The grit almost wore through the bottles too!

I bought a few Bell alloy cages in the USA with a rubber belt to hold the bottle. This has another hidden benefit in holding other items in the cage instead of the regulation size waterbottle.

I would consider selling a couple @ £9each posted if there is interest.

Mail me if interested.

I've got a side entry bottle cage, but I do also have a small frame which means I can't have anything else.

In short, this post was completely useless.

Try the Blackburn Mountain bottle cage.CRC

Not especially pretty, just functional, but holds the bottle very securely, and designed specifically for off road riding.

Bontrager ones have a lip that holds onto bottles tightly, you have to use bottles with an indent though - most have them.

Bontrager Race Lite are the only cages I've used where I haven't either lost a bottle, broken the cage or both. They can even cope with fast, rocky descents on my cross bike.

I got two cheapo carbon fibre ones off eBay about £15 for two from Taiwan, for the cross bike
Had doubt s initially but they survived a coast to coast ride and today kept hold of bottle on an offroad secrion where bike nearly lost me so I reckon they are pretty good for the cash, weigh nothing, look exactly like those bonty carbon x ones but without any graphics,oh and it was a big 700ml bottle they where holding too
Can't rec the seller but search carbon bottle cage and you should see them, they have about 7 different designs I got the one that looked most secure

Edit - this seller but mine slighter different design http://bit.ly/zv7TgA

Second-hand Ringle H2O. Sweetest cage out there!

Can be had on eBay for £10-25 normally.

You can adjust how tightly it grips your bottle by loosening the bolts, pushing the sides together, and then tightening the bolts again. The edge of the cage overlaps itself at the bolt holes and the holes are drilled for width adjustment (you can kind of see what I mean here)
