What's the best way to clean and lube a cassette on a road bike without contaminating the disc rotor?
Does anyone make a simple card/plastic shield or am I overthinking this?
Soapy water
Chain lube.
Same as any other bike.
you're overthinking this
degreaser of choice in a jam-jar applied sparingly with an old paintbrush, clean, drip oil of choice on chain
Putoline.
What Tinas said! One advantage is not having to clean cassettes or spray chains!
Soapy water
Chain lube.
Same as any other bike.
Expect at the moment you must make sure to scrub each sprocket with the soapy water for at least 20 seconds. Use dry chain lube for the alcohol content.
😉
If you're desperate to buy something I think muc off do a thing that covers your rotors.
What about repurposing the plastic spoke guard?
What’s the best way to clean and lube a cassette
You don't lube cassettes on bicycles. Only lube the chain (sparingly, using a drop lube not a spray)
"lube a cassette" ?
I just take the wheel off, get a washing-up brush covered in fairy liquid and push/pull the cassette round with it. Comes up lovely
(shower cap over the rotor for brake bleeding)
Thanks all.
“lube a cassette” ?
If I don't have time or inclination to dry a cassette after a wet ride I'll often just hit it and the chain with WD40 because it only takes 2 days for the first signs of rust to appear...
I use an old army bergan sidepouch linerthen have at the cassette with some degreaser and one of the muc-off cassette brushes.
If you’re just wanting to spray WD like a madman without the rotor getting hit then why not just get a big sheet of cardboard and cut a slot from one edge to the middle. Then slide it between the rotor and the spokes and go nuts.
I recently started using a chain keeper or dummy wheel to do a proper degreasing job, so it's all done with the back wheel off. Rear wheel/cassette cleaned off the bike. As others have said you don't need to lube the cassette, just the chain. The only cause of contamination I can see is if you use a spray lube with the back wheel on. This video demonstrates how to avoid that (from about 3:20) by lubricating with the wheel off and wrapping up the caliper. Of course that's not an issue if you don't use a spray lube.
