Hello,
I've got a steel Solaris frame, lovely apart from the fact that it only has bottle cage mounts on the down tube, no idea why, seems really daft.
Anyway, I want some on the seat-tube. Where in the Borders, or maybe Edinburgh, would folks recomend to get some fitted? Or could it be a DIY job and if so how do I do it?
cheers.

Get them brazed in, don't DIY it with rivnuts. Andy at Eastside bikes (Edinburgh) or Ben Cooper at Kinetics in Glasgow.

This is how I got round the issue of moving my water bottle around:

£3

Extra bonus, you can put them on suspension fork legs to make a fake Anything Cage mount that just takes a water bottle.

Retrodirect - out of interest why not rivnuts? I have a couple of frames that were built with rivnuts for bottle cages.

Drill and rivnut if you want to DIY (most "normal" bike frames have rivnuts).

Kinetics or similar if you want braze on.

Check seatpost insertion first.

Steel bikes have them brazed in because the stress will triple around any hole drilled and the braze-on provides support for the hole.

Aluminium frames often use rivnuts but have been designed to account for this stress concentration.

I mean it's your choice but it's a fancy steel frame so it's probably better to do it the proper way.

Thanks all.
Yes, frame should hopefully be kept a while so will get it done properly.

Swarf will do you a nice job.

For info, the other homebrew option is to silver solder using a plumbing mapp gas torch. Bosses can be made from M5 nuts with half the hex skimmed off to locate in a 6.5 or 7mm hole in the tube. Assuming you have access to a lathe 🙂

Cheers Mick, but Adrian has given me a very reasonable quote and the chances of me cocking it up are much greater than the chances of it going wrong if he does it, for that price I'll take it to a pro!

Last I knew kinetics were not taking on work like this.

Henderson's in Edinburgh worth a try

Hello,
Quick bit of feedback in case anyone has come accross this looking for similar.
Got the job done by Adrian from Swarf. He's a little disorganised but more importantly he's made a very good job of it and for a very reasonable price too, would recommend.
