where can i get some at a reasonable price? What size do they go up to? Are they easy to mount onto mavic xm819 tube less? Hearing good things about these for mud obviously and wet routes and the likes!

Size - they come in 1.8 and 2.0. The 1.8s are better (for grip and longevity) as they have a different casing.

Fit fine on my 819's, just had issue with the porous sidewalls, as they are from last winter & I have used them with tube previously.
Never heard that about the 1.8's though, interesting.

The 1.8" comes in two versions, one heavier but tougher due to the 'Abrasion Resistant Casing".

Strangely, the text on the Bonty website says its the 2.0 with ARC..
http://www.bontrager.com/model/04314
I think the chart is correct though.
Oh and they are Tubeless Ready, not Tubeless.

Yeah, the ARC casing is the difference between me running Bonty tyres or not, the first Jones ACX I had lasted about a month before I put a 1" gash in the side of it, which I've never done to a tyre before or since.

The ARC FR4 I had though seemed bullet broof, not to mention super sticky.

Shame the 2.0 Mud X doesn't with ARC casing.

the 2. 0 on lexs site say they are ARC? Tempted by these, can anyone confirm? Also with sayin tube less ready? Are they ok to run without the sealant justa tire on a ust rim?

I doubt you could run them without sealant.

I've reluctantly had to concede that you would be lucky if you could run even proper UST tyres without sealant...

I have the 2.0, great performing tyre, imo.

I use them all year round.

However, going tubeless didn't work for me. It was an inconsistent experience. Staying inflated sometimes, then other times, burping, coming off the rim, losing air during the ride.

In the end, I had too many rides compromised with tyre related issues.

So now I still run them, but I'm back with tubes.
That way I get to enjoy the entire ride, no stopping to faff and reinflate.

When I did try tubeless with these tyres, I ran them with the hutchinson protect-air sealant, which worked well and stayed liquid for a good while.

I have XM819s on DT 240s, built by Jerry of JT Cycles in Ely

cheers for the advice, gonna order some, i do run tyre with stans sealant so shouldnt be a problem hopefully, heard good things for wet routes and the likes so will give them a shot, for 38 for a pair you cant complain so worth a shot! Look forward to the mud ! Also as it says tube less ready, what willi need to run them on mavic xm819 ust rims? Just some sealant and the tyre?

just some sealant and the tyre - 819 are proper UST rims & so dont require tape.

doubt you'll get them on with a track pump, in fact id be amazed, only after a bit of a faff got them on with a proper compressor! they come up quite thin, so if your after a thick tyre then this isnt it, its quite skinny even at the biggest 2.0, but that obviously isnt an issue as they are amazing!!!

anyways they are on and by christ where have these been all my life??!?!?!! they are super fast, amazingly grippy and scarily given me a go faster confidence! they PISS on nobby nics for grip and probably speed, cut through mud, grip unbelievable over roots/wet roots/greasy rocks etc etc, found myself not braking at all on bits im usually cautious of on just my first ride on them! bring on more gloop i say!! 😆

also left them pumped up rock hard first night just to make sure the bead was seated and shaped for future and if it lost its seating when deflated for sealant, and 100% perfecto! both tyres were still the same the next morning, deflated put 2 lots of sealant in each tyre and went back up a treat, shaked well, no leaking went for a ride and no burping or loss of air the next morning! overall very impressed, just a ball ache if you dont havea compressor!

Mine went on first time with a track pump and yes they are fantastic tyres which you can use all year round, in fact even though it's going to be bone dry I'm still going to keep mine on for the Bristol Oktoberfest this weekend.

kingtut - sorry i heard they go on fine with stans/bonty rims but ours are xm819? if yours are too then i must have just had a dodgy pair 😆 or thats what ill tell myself after pumping my arms into next week for nothing 🙁

good point king tut - was going to mention that - i think ill be using these an all year round tyre! mix of conditions over 2 rides, from bone dry to a mud fest and on road etc etc and i was truly 100% impressed! just think they are incredible! the grip is unbelievable!

I've got these and they are good but if fitting from new I found leaving them inside out for a night made fitting a lot easier

Yep loved the way Mud X ride, got fed up with them falling apart though.

Might try the 1.8's if they are available in a stronger sidewall.

I run the 2.0 versions tubeless with Bontu super juice sealant on Rhythm Pro TLR rims. Managed to get them on with a track pump but as the rims are wide and the tyres quite slim, it was a bit of a faff compared with the Conti MK 2.4s which go straight on without any problems.

Fantastic tyres in anything but done dry condtions

Mine are DT Swiss rims so I guess it's XM819s that are the problem, if you haven't already, try running them at silly low pressures (25 psi) they hold up really well.

ahh may explain it above with the narrow tyre/wider rim scenario! there does appear to many gaps in the tyre like its too loose on the rim from new (even managed to slide it on no hassle) with any other tubeless 2.2 tyre i need levers to get the last bit on....so yeah guess that could be the problem with 819's with them!

kingtut, running them both at 30 according to digital gauge, no doubt will drop abit of air over a few rides anyways, i think last time i checked my NN they were running at about 25-27!

i love them though, these tyres are awesome, just hope they dont end up being too weak for peaks rides etc, held up fine last night on mega rocky stuff, just abit worried about it burbing air as they are that thin and narrow feels like they are about to fall off 😆 cant see how that would happen though as the bead popped 4 or 5 times meaning its on properly, that said im only light weight and a light rider....always get a bit scared going gung-ho when i put new tyres on so these are no exception!

shame they dont do the ARC version if it is that much stronger, cant understand why you would stick it on a thinner 1.8 tyre and not the option to have it on a more trail ready 2.0 tyre though, most bizarre!

Biggest problem with them is that they have a thin sidewall (compared to UST) so when folded they don't get their shape back properly.
This is why the Bonty instructions recommend fitting them with a tube, inflating to 40psi and leaving overnight. That way, when you fit them tubeless they are shaped better, stretched to fit easier and seal without too much effort.

yeah my mate said its defo worth leaving over night to let it get its shape properly should i ever need to take it off and put it back on again from unseating the bead, didnt use the tube technique as i didnt have one spare at the time, but in future when i buy these again ill defo try that first!

I like these tyres but the weights seem optimistic. It said 550 g on the web, but they are 610 g on my scales.

Don't run tubeless anymore, but I used that combo on my winter bike and it was brilliant.
No punctures, no air loss and very tactile even in freezing conditions.
Edit; I used Bonty? juice in mine, just needed a few puffs once a month.

my newest set of 2.0's (swinnerton's last summer, £40 a pair) have a much more robust sidewall than the last set of 2.0's. Not sure if this is ARC but definitely an improvment.

Kingtut & Luminous - how do you find them in summer? I currently run Jones ACXs as all round tyres, and although the sidewalls are pretty flimsy, they still work for me better than Fire XC Pros. The only real area they're not quite so strong, IMHO, is slippery roots and suchlike, hence considering something like the Mud X. Although I'd prefer a 2.0/ ARC combo.

I got my mud x's about 3 or 4 years ago so YMMV but...

went up tubeless fine. This time I tried using just a track pump and sloshing of sealant and they did eventually go up. No preparing one side with a tube either. Just out tyres on, add sealant, slosh, pump, ping. No porous sidewall issues despite being 3 years old.

Once of them blew off the rim after 5 minutes at 60 psi though, don't do that. 😳

This was on Stans 355 rims.

I've always used the bonty mud x tubeless and never ever had a problem with them, ace winter tires.
never had to resort to using anything else but a track pump to inflate either, would deffo recommend
60 psi what in gods name were you thinking??!!!

Think of it as a stress test, make sure it's not leaking etc etc.

Well it wasn't leaking.

That would be the Stan's rim that says it's rated to something like 40 PSI?

If memory serves me correctly Bontrager Mud tyres used to blow apart. Has Kieth solved this problem?

There are also not so good if you find yourself on rock.

The 2nd hand one i ran a few years ago is a tubeless ready 2.0 with AR Casing. My new ones have it too and they have all fitted fine on 819s.

They can be inflated from new on a clean flat&dent-free 819 rim without fluid.Did it last week.

not ran them long enough to know but what i do know for certainty is that a 2.0 is a complete bugger to get on an Stans Alpine rim. Took 1/2 an hour of fighting before i became the natural victor.

You lose mud x

Are they the same as the Bontrager Jones Mud X UST ? If so I got a pair from Stu Price at Dales Mountain Bike Centre for £25 each a couple of months ago

i prefer the 1.8 for mud, they are also faster in proper mud, mudx generally ****in slow in the sticky stuff, but then what mud tyre isnt i guess. they fit no problem on all rims i've tried stans mavic dt though tough the first time, inner tube first trick is best. when running tubeless they have sometimes mysteriously gone down after the first few days original install but after a few days the wheel milk takes hold and they stay up great. walls arent particularly week and not particularly puncture prone for there weight.

all this said im really liking a maxxis mimo 1.4! for mud situations, low volume and clogs in real sticky stuff but its light and fast for everything else
