Hi, what is the difference between the expert and team tyres in the Bontrager tyre range ?

The expert range has a lighter casing so is more prone to punctures and sidewall damage.
The range gets a tougher casing in this order.
Xr4 expert
Xr4 team
Se4
G4

I ride the se4 which is similar to maxxis exo protection

Useful to know that, thanks rich. I ride the team issue tyres, not had a sidewall rip or tear yet.

Off topic slightly. I noticed the XR4 has thicker rubber between the tread blocks (in other words across the whole tread area) than many other tyres available.

The side walls are similar to other brands of the same TPI though, so if you buy the thinnest then jump and smash drops you will pinch flat!

Bizarrely I was researching this exact question this very afternoon.

I took an XR4 Team Issue off my Rumblefish - it had only done 200 miles or so as I put some Big Apples on for a family summer holiday. Anyway I came to put the XR4 back on and I now have a bulging sidewall ... I think due to careless storage of the tyre.

The specs that I found were:

XR4 Team Issue
FT/RR/PR: Dual
TPI: 120
Durometer: 62a/60a
Bead: Aramid
26" x 2.20 - 680g
26" x 2.35 - 760g
27.5" x 2.20 - 710g
27.5" x 2.35 - 780g
29" x 2.30 - 790g

XR4 Expert
FT/RR/PR: Dual
TPI: 60
Durometer: 62a/60a
Bead: Aramid
Weight: 26" - 790g, 27.5" - 820g, 29" - 820g

I believe the SR tyres have a softer compound as well as tougher casing.
Really like my SE5 on the front so far this winter.

I'll be going SE4 for the summer in think then it can go on the back next winter once this HD has died.

Worth noting that the tread has changed slightly on newer 4s as well though that may only be the wider 2.4 at the moment.

@kamikazie What's the SE5 like in the slop? Have you got it paired with an SE4 on the back?

Reason for asking is just ordered an SE5 for the front to replace the SE4 F/R combo I have currently. Riding the tweed valley mostly where it can get very sloppy at times and the SE4 doesn't clear well.

Any issues with running a 2.3 upfront with a 2.4 on the back?

It's been unseasonably dry in South Wales but I've found it clears well enough. Seems to cope as well as others in their MM is most conditions.

I've got a Hand Dampf on the back at the moment but will look to replace with the SE4 or XR4 next year. I'll probably go with the 2.35 as I doubt I'll have enough clearance for a 2.4 on the back.

Although looking at the specs, the new XR4 in 2.4 is lighter and has softer side rubber than the old one so I might risk the clearance and give it a shot.
Can use it on the front in the summer then!

Thanks. I've ordered an SE5 for the front. Was out in much slop today and the SE4 offered very little grip although it's great as a back tyre.
