Do I just back this off with a 5 mm hex head (normal thread)? It's very tight and I'm worried I'm backing off the wrong part. I can't see any pinch bolts or anything,

Managed to back it off just think it was over torqued a bit from CRC
Strange cos the rear axle was barely tight.

Yep, one on mine have approx 10-16nM torque written by hex key hole, I usually go towards lower end so I can take wheel off easier on the road if the fairy visits.
