A Karate mate of mine has buggered up his wrist to the extent that he has just had a plate inserted (fell over in the bathroom!). When he comes back to training he is going to need something to protect it.

Can anyone recommend some wrist armour that can take a good old whack when doing defensive blocks yet leave a degree of movement?

A mate with a damaged wrist uses a skateboarding wrist protector

You can find all sorts of supports and protectors in:

As above, skate or snowboard protectors would do the job.

I'd be tempted to recommend the latter, as they're designed to work under gloves. OK, so under winter gloves, but they might be better.

I rode with a Demon snowboarding wrist guard for a year after my wrist was totalled and plated.

Having broken mine quite badly in 2003, I wore a 661 wrist strap pro for a few years and it was reasonably comfortable,

with a couple of thickening pads you can remove for more mobility/less protection depending on what you’re riding

I would wear it today if riding more technical trails or on uplift days

Personally use as All Sports Dynamics brace and it’s spot on. I have a plated wrist and ulna and was told another break and it probably won’t go back together.

Wrist is ordered from the states and used widely in MX. Started to appear more in MTB last few seasons too.

For Karate training, not riding. Needs to dissipate the impact from a blocked punch or kick.

Won't be much use for punching pads, but I guess he's just going to have to build that back up slowly.

It also needs to be safe for the person he's training with, so no sticky-out bits or bolt heads.

Ah, got it!

Something in D3O might work then. Flexible, unobtrusive, but protective.

Just a bit of foam stitched into a tube with some elastic? Then wear a standard support underneath? Cover the two issues separately?

Probably the easiest and cheapest way?

How about a dipped foam sparring glove?

I use a wrist brace from Lloyds pharmacy but removed the aluminium braces and replaced with a stuff plastic. I also made the palm support a little shorter. This gives me a fair amount of support but still allows movement where as the aluminium supports are 100% rigid.
