Well actually I'm tempted, but are they worth it,and/or what are the alternatives?
Well I think that answers the question.
They're good but it depends what you want it to do. Too flashy for a commuter IMO, but that'll depend on your situation. I want something that I can do a load of miles on without any TLC at all, in the rain or with road salt, and that nobody'll ever want to steal. The Boardman (and most other nice hybrids) has some nice kit that'll be a shame to grind to bits.
I bought one as a commuter, the basic model.
Love it, i have two 2K+ mtb's but for smiles per £ this bike is ace. I don't like drops so a bike with a flat bar was a must. Handles well, comfy enough for 100+ mile rides, climbs easily due to the 50/36 compact chainset mixed with a SRAM 9-speed mtb cassette on the rear. Well built frame with lovely smooth welds and rolls surprisingly quickly. It's not a 'racing' bike but as a commuter or tourer it has few equals i reckon.
Well worth the £500 i dropped on it.
I have a Boardman hybrid team (previous model). Its a cracking bike and very quick. I use mine for my 20 mile round commute 4 times a week.
Our bike shelter at work is out of sight and security is good so pretty safe. I would not buy one if you have to leave it somewhere that was not secure because the Boardman brand is well know to thieves due to the popularity.

Used mine for touring, commute, winter training. Great bike 6 years old now. Flat bars disk brakes panniers.
I bought a second hand Boardman road this year. Very pleased.
my Dad has had 2 in the space of six months. First one after a while there was a scraping sound and it turned out the chainset hadnt been given enough clearance and was scraping on the frame and took the paint off so halfords spaced it out but that just upset the chainline and caused further problems so that bike got replaced for a new one. After a few months there was some play in the seatpost and after taking it out it turned out that it had split around 3/4 of the post. The first incident may just be because Halfords suck as he had the replacement bike set up elsewhere and mechanically wise has had no issues. Apart from those issues he has been pleased with it.
