I’m looking at getting a boardman 8.9 adr gravel bike.
At 5ft 10 I shoukd be looking at medium size But bit confused as frame is only c54 and my road bike is a 56.

I’ve tried a large and it does feel a stretch but “doable’ but this just might because thar one is for sale at decent price?

Anyone have this bike and can advise or any general advice on whether should size up or down for a gravel bike?

I’m 5’11 with the medium, it fits fine. It is more upright than my road bike but that is what you would expect. I’ve been very happy with it.

I've a large 8.8 (2018 model) at just under 5'10.

I am running a shorter stem (80mm maybe) but I reckon the medium of the same vintage would be too small.

Geo on the 2019 vs 2021 is identical so not sure if the 2022 is any different frame wise from what I have..

i have the 8.9e, in medium, at 5'8/9, ive fitted slightly wider 440mm bars with more flare to suit me, id go by the manufacturers recommendation and just adjust with stem and bar changes to suit you

Boardman's size up large IMO - I had an XS when I had one of their road bikes.

I'd go medium if the large feels stretched, you want to be a bit more upright on a gravel bike than your ride bike IMO.

Agree, Boardman's are big. I'm 5'11 and had a shot of a guys in a car park. I thought it was a large, it was a medium.

I've looked at the adv 8.9 a few times online and I reckon the small would work for me with a ~120mm+ stem, same height as OP with short legs (typically ~72cm BB to saddle top, ~89cm pedal top to saddle top), as would the medium with a ~110mm stem.
