Where is the boa dial? Side or back?

Might be worth using some overshoes in winter.

My boa dial gave me a load of problems. The plastic coating rubbed off and started getting caught. I removed it and it fixed the problem.

I also emailed boa and they sent me a whole replacement kit for free. Their service was excellent.

I've three pairs of shoes with Boa fittings, two are fine, one ratchet on the other pair has given up.

Is it on a particular pair of shoes? I've had it on a pair of North Waves for a couple years and it's been great, even for manky CX races where running through claggy mud is the order of the day.

on the side on north wave shoes.

you twist it to tighten and it has a little metal thing you push to release. obviously it had filled with gunge and wont push.
I am gonna remove it and fit laces. they will go in the fastenings where the boa wire goes.

NorthWave don't use BOA, it's there own system – SLW2. I have NW road shoes with it and they've been fine, but I'm not sure it would cope with mud very well as the lace is erm ... a lace so crap sticks to it. My old Specialized road shoes had BOA and that uses a fine cable not a lace which I imagine would cope with mud a lot better.

Actually a boa or a n other brand? All my boas have lifted to disengage and I've had a few over the years which I've used for everything from cx races or wading along calf-deep-with-I-hope-it's-mud-bridleways to commuting with no problems. (the cable snapped on my summer mtb shoes this year, replaced foc by boa, and has lasted a lot longer than I ever get from laces so 8 can't complain)

As above, NW don't use Boa, squirt some GT85 in there, works wonders

That means you’ve just claimed that every single wire system is gash. Whereas it seems like many work perfectly fine

My Northwave dial thingys have have been fine. Winter Road boots that get a daily use, summer road shoes and MTB shoes that are used for CX at the weekends for the last 2 years. No problems. The Decathlon boa type dials though are shyte.

Ton,

How long have you had them? Can you contact northwave for a warranty?

Useful thread.

1. I also thought all BOA's were the same (i.e BOA had patented the wire dial thing)

2. Was looking for some shoes and had shortlisted Northwave

Will probably look only at those brands using real BOA now. It makes more sense to pull up rather than push down to release, especially in muddy conditions.

Wore my NorthWave ones in the Surrey Hills wetfest of two weeks back...one ride siezed the system up and I had to vaseline them off.

I've subsequently blasted the whole thing with WD 40 and thrown them repeatedly across the garage in anger. Low and behold, they seem to work again. I suspect more due to the WD rather than the lobbing...but nonetheless.

What a stupid design though.

I sprayed mine with wd40 this morning, and they work again, probably until I ride in mud again.

not a very good design IMHO

I know it's not the point, as the design is obviously flawed, but can you not just squirt a bit of water from your bottle around it before pushing it down to release it?

I had doubts about boa or Northwaves own version so went for boots without it. A couple of reviews of the shimano and northwave boots mentioned issues with them.....

I got Northwave X cross gtx boots which are very similar to Shimano mw7 but with out the generic boa system.

Ton, what size are you? If 47 or 48 then these are a bargain with proper boa.
