My son, who is not a massive fan of cycling, wants to get a BXM for general hacking around, going to his friends' houses, and maybe a bit of play at a skateboard park (or whatever they're called.

He wants to pay for it himself, and doesn't have a very big budget.

Any recommendations? What kind of price do you have to exceed in order to get a real bike and not a BSO? Or are BSOs even a problem in the BMX world?

Have a look on ebay for a 2nd hand one. I managed to pick up a bargain one for my son. Most are local collection only, so don't sell for much.

2nd ebay and they don't go for much, even the decent ones. Ones that do go for a high price are shill bidded or exceptional custom builds.

Thanks for that. But what constitutes a 'decent one'? I mean, is this decent?

Are there manufacturers to look for, and manufacturers to avoid?

He's approaching the age where it's all about what looks cool. All the 13somethings I know are very fashion conscious and want something that looks like on 'that' youtube video. i think he'd even overlook it being 2nd hand if it looks cool ie custom build or looks custom build. Plus he's 12, that link is for a bike 7 to 12 yo, you should be looking for 12+, something like a 20" or 20.5" frame depending on his size. For example, there was a WeThePeople Trust locally on ebay recently, a £650 bike which went for £120. The Trust was very highly regarded for a none custom build where the parts are nearish custom quality. one good quality rear brake will be better than two brakes on a really cheap bike and be more cool to a kid (no one other than children have two brakes on their BMX according to my godson). BTW i'm not a BMXer, just gone thru the curve of buying a couple of BMX for my godson over the last few years, he's now nearly 14.

My son's a spoilt brat*, who has a practically brand new Hoffman Bmx, that he doesn't want anymore. It's a great looking bike, if your son's interested. Looks new due to lack of use!
You probably want to know how much and what it looks like, so I'll find out! (It's at the ex's house)

(*not really, he uses his Mtb for riding to school every day)

you are overthinking this, if you are a beginner you don't need a decent bike, it would be embarrassing if you had an expensive bike and couldn't even bunny hop. It will get trashed pretty quickly anyway
