Even by STW standards that's pretty impressively bad.... had to scroll down to the seventeenth thread to find one about mountain biking

And here I am at home, with a day off, the sun is shining and can I be arsed.... 😔

Motivate me.

Usual problem: want to do a long ride but don't have the oomph & energy but can't be bothered unless I think the ride is going to be something really special. Which is stoopid as not every ride can be awesumz.

Might go back to bed.

I’ve been shut up in a house full of covid and small kids for the last 9 days. I still have five more days before I can get out and would give plenty to be able to be out riding now.

Do it.

Pick a cafe a short ride away.

Ride there in the sunshine. Then decide whether to come home the long way.

I was laid in bed at 6:20 thinking why would I want to be out in the mud rather than here.

By 6:30 I'd given myself a kick up the arse and got my gear together. By 6:40 I was on the bike and heading towards my local bridleways.

The ground was surprisingly dry, I descended into some pictuesque low-lying mist, saw a great sunrise and got home with a grin on my face.

The hardest step is always the one out of the door, once you're out it's rare you end up less happy.

There's a forum about bikes? What's the point of that?

I've got a pretty quiet morning, ride here and I'll make you a brew, then you can decide if you want to keep going into The Hills.

Absolutely true, doesn't make the first step any easier though!

Why does a ride have to be long to be 'something really special'? Some of my most enjoyable rides have been a snatched hour or two on superficially unpromising days made special by something I've seen or someone I've met. Go and ride something gentle and familiar and see where it goes would be my take. Everything painted autumnal at the moment, trail conditions are better than you'd think and the sun is shining 🙂

It doesn't matter how far or how fast you do it, it only matters that you do it.

Also echo the sentiments above - sometimes I don't feel like it before I go out, but I can't think of any instances when I've gone out and regretted it, or thought anything other than "that's better..."

Happens all the time on this forum ask a question about bikes your lucky to get ten responses ask one about Toasters, cars or coffee machines and you’ll be inundated.

Just go ride even if it’s 1 hour. I get in that mindset sometimes if it’s not a longride it’s not worth doing. I’m sat here with a knackered knee limited to 30 mins gentle spin on the wattbike I’d love to get out even it’s just down the the local cycle path.

A thousand times this ^^

Go and tidy/tart up your local trails.
That's what I do for short runs, and it's usually where we go for night rides ,so some good payback later in the week when we are not getting smacked in the head/legs/arms by 'that branch'. Take some cutters and have a wee pootle . 🙂

I only look at the Bike Forum and that’s what’s saved in my Favourites so I’d totally forgotten about any other forums

Don't knock it. Those poor souls on Pinkbike haven't got a bloody clue what the best stove top espresso maker is!
I pity them to be honest.

Every single time someone asks something on there, they create a sub-forum for it. There's a lot of non-bike chat I'm sure but you just can't find it 😂
It's horrible. Praise be to stw for its clean lines.

Some of my most memorable rides are the ones when I've had to force myself to go in the first place.

So i'm thinking about going on a ride, but my toaster buzzes just sitting on the counter top. Should I go ride or will my house burn down. Can anyone recommend a decent toaster that i can look at while i procrastinate about riding

Can't be assed I'm going out for a bike ride 😉

Uhhhh snide comments don't work as motivation do they?

What I mean is I don't know how to motivate you. I'm going out for a bike ride. Just get up and go out for a bike ride.

Don't do a long ride. Go for a short one, then if you are anything like me you'll fancy staying out longer.

Yes more short rides more frequently. You don't have to come back from a bike ride barely able to function as a human being because you've exhausted yourself.

Even by STW standards that’s pretty impressively bad

It does feel like it's reaching peak Bougie recently.

It used to be singlespeeds in sheds and "what tyres for". Now it's What carbon pedals for my turbo trainer* road bike and German SUVs.

*Even the turbo recomendations now costs more than my car!

I’ve got a pretty quiet morning, ride here and I’ll make you a brew,

😀 Seeing that has cheered me up. Knew I should have checked for replies before I set off.

Can't decide if I failed dismally or failed gracefully... got all my lights and batteries and shit together and set off with the wife's list of things to do and meals to cook ringing in my ears. Explored a few bridleways and footpaths on the way to Alderley and then realised it wasn't worth the grief and I wasn't going to get back in time to cook tea and take the kid to basketball if i did the full route. So I went up Swiss Hill and then came home. On the plus side, even 36km on knobbly tyres is at least some exercise.

Need to get cracking on the jobs this afternoon and then maybe try again in the Peak tomorrow.

On the plus side (not really) at least now I know that even with Rekons pumped up solid, the Occam is nowhere near as fast or fun as the Anthem on easy stuff.
And since I didn't even make it to Charity Lane I didn't get the chance to have it in its element.

This might be the last chance to ride those less-than-weatherproof trails until next April. Enjoy while you can

‘The hardest step is always the one out of the door, once you’re out it’s rare you end up less happy’

So utterly true. Only one ride in my life this wasn’t true, and in retrospect those of us on that ride now fondly remember ‘the ride we don’t mention’ because it was so abysmal

Dude, get out and ride.

I broke my leg 9 weeks ago. Still can't ride or even walk without a crutch. I have spent the last 9 weeks with a sad face at the window watching people ride past in the gorgeous autumn sun.

Finally have enough movement in my knee to turn the cranks on a turbo trainer this week.

I have suffered from low motivation on many occasion but suddenly realise that once you cant ride, you really appreciate what good a ride does for your head.

Dude, get out and ride. Get the F*** out and ride. You will love it and feel better for it, you know you will.

But go careful though, and stay safe.

if you don’t go for a ride, you may end up with an injury picked up around the house and unable to ride for months. you could be safer out on your bike

Swap 'running' for 'riding' and this is pretty on-point

FTFY 😉

You see I differentiate strongly between posts about biking and posts about bikes ( or other gear) Currently none of the latest 16 posts in the biking forum is about biking, they're all about biking kit. Which I still find mind blowing. I'm still amazed at what a bunch of gear freaks we all are. Look on ukc or snowheads and the gear versus doing ratio is much more healthy.
