Haha good effort. 🙂
I've just started using my Lumenator for commuting...havnt had any complaints yet, but I have been aiming at the front wheel for the unlit cycle-path sections!
mine arrived today, the missus rang to ask me earlier, now what have you bought! lol.
Well, it works pretty well.
I made some creases at the side to bring the brow down a bit further, and stuck some black electrical tape on the top - having hundreds of lumens diffused up into your face is a little distracting.
It cuts the top of the beam off quite nicely, meaning you can either use a setting higher or point it further up the road without causing any more accidents than you did before.
What an excellent idea, me like 🙂
I know what my next bodge project will be...
Will that not affect cooling?
I'd guess you could vent the top as all youre looking for is the visor
Dan, probably a bit, but it's only for road riding, where it doesn't go above halfway.
Can't see it being an issue.
It's easy to slide it out from under the zip tie and put in a pocket, too.
Got shouted at by a jag driver to "turn that f*ckin' light off, I can't see a f*ckin' thing" while sat behind him at a junction with the lumenator on flash mode. The guy had a point so I now rotate it down a bit in urban areas and turn the bars away from straight ahead when stopped behind traffic. That diffuser looks to be a decent alternative, might cobble up something similar.
That makes sense! I like the idea though. My Spidereyes has a "hood" and it does make a difference!

I'm with Mr Jag on this one, the lumenator flash mode isn't so much "look at me" as "sue me as I've destroyed your retinas"

Me too - the 'flash' mode is completely un-usable in ALL places apart from an epileptic fit research centre. Its a shame you cant adjust the brightness of the flash - a 10% brightness flash would be much less ridiculous.
Good points, the flash rate is annoyingly quick and the output when on strobe appears to be set at max, despite lower outputs being available when on steady. Flashing bike lights with certain strobe frequencies and outputs were legalised a few years ago. Would be nice if an otherwise excellent product could be made road legal.
Good points, not being a commuter or using the strobe this sort of feedback is good, I will certainly go back to my supplier and suggest your ideas to them and see what we can come up with. I was just happy that you didn't go into the strobe mode as you pressed through the brightness settings.

^^This is definitely a good thing.
From personal experience, I only ever used a flashing mode on previous lights a) because they weren't really bright enough to be easily noticed on the road on constant mode, and b) to save battery.
With the Lumenator though, even on 10% mode it is very noticeable on the road, and after 2 weeks solid commuting 10 miles each way in the dark - my battery has only just dropped into the 'blue' phase (which I believe still means there is something like 60% left!!)
So nedrapier - when are we going to see the finished article, and when are they going on the market? 😛
Smudge. You built a cracking value mtb light that some of us choose to use for commuting. Not your fault that we use it outwith your design remit. FWIW, the legal position on road use flashing bike lights is an output that emits no less than 4 candela and a flash rate between 60 - 240 Hz. IIRC there are also viewing angle requirements but they may be buried in earlier legislation. Modifications to output and flash rate may be easy to programme but viewing angle mods may be trickier to achieve without affecting cost or off road effectiveness.
Here's the amending statute; complicated
and the CTC explanation; slightly simpler
I've been told by the police not to use the strobe mode on the Lumenator on the road, fair enough, it is pretty mental, and distracting. I've just been using it on the lowest mode, pointed at my front wheel and not had any complaints, head light flashes or even funny looks, but the home made diffuser looks like a good idea 🙂
I used mine for the first time last night, my ride home is a mix of:
lit busy road
unlit shared towpath
unlit offroad trail
unlit country road
having seen everybodies comments on here, I dipped the light down and ran it on the lowest setting until I got offroad and then turned it up, great light. Once I got back on the country road, I turned it down to 70% and nobody complained or flashed me. I decided in the alst couple of miles I'd angle it up slightly and sure enough started getting a couple of flashes from cars.
on max or 70% its as stong as my old HID lumi but the beam is wider and its a third of the cost, all of which is great.
the strobe isnt something I'll use unless I find a glitterball and need a disco.
great light.
