I'm slowing working my way through my bike collection - riding them again (some after a lot of years of no use) and in most cases moving them to 1x10 or 1x11.
Today's ride was on a bike I've not ridden for at least 10 years, an ancient 2003 Specialized Enduro SX - but all it needed was the tyres pumped up, some air in the forks plus some oil on the chain (although I did swap out the seized Maverick dropper post for a normal one). The brakes and drive-train (a mix of Shimano XT and Deore) all worked fine.
With a coil shock and Bomber 55R forks it's no lightweight (at 36lbs it's full 8lbs heavier than my next heaviest mountain bike) but rolls quite well so was't that hard work uphill. Downhill it's still pretty quick and even PB'd a couple of the more technical/slippery sections today.
Not entirely sure what I'm going to do with it now. I've got a spare 1x11 set-up (with an 11-51 cassette) so might bung that on it along with a spare HTII chainset and BB - although I can't ever see me riding it a lot.
Awesome bikes. Snapped both the ones I had at the chainstay.
Wow. Your heaviest bike is 28lb?! That's good going.
Wow. Your heaviest bike is 28lb?! That’s good going.
Most of my other bikes are hardtails (and not particularly light ones, ranging from 24 to 26lbs) and my other two full-suss bikes (a Specialized Epic and an S-Works Enduro) are lightish. It's the S-Works Enduro that's 28lbs. All of my mountain bikes are very also old!
Actually I forgot one that's heavier than the S-Works Enduro! My BFe is about 30lb.

Im surprised it's 36lb, they only came in two sizes, tiny, and tinier!

I built this during lockdown from my spares pile, awesome bikes!
Threipmuir. The Black Springs end.
Gosh, I bought one of those brand new in 2003 after reading about it in Dirt magazine. I was 17, it was my first suspension bike/frame and cost me a lot, relatively. Was brillaint bike in the day, swapped all the parts from my Kona Chute over.
Made way for my Transition Dirtbag which I imported a coupld of years later.
Weirdly I bought the same ( THE same ) frame again off ebay a few years later in 2008, and even then I realised how niche/oddball it was.
It was the height of duel/ 4 cross / super cross type racing, it was brilliant at that, and jumps etc, but actually pretty silly otherwise.
I remember spending ages deliberating into where to hacksaw my expensive Thomson seat post, as you could have it either the right length for pedalling, or the right length for slamming it without it hitting the shock, and ending up with something in the middle which was neither. Imagine that!

ETA - it was actually a beautiful piece of manufacturing, the pressed and welded monococque halves were really cool. Dont think theres anyone doing anything quite like that anymore.
I had a double dropper in mine, think they were developed for the Scott DH frames of the same year.
Could have been a Syncros one
Very nice, I love older Specialized bikes!
I had an 05 Demo 8 and 06 SX Trail and they were two of the best bikes I've ever owned, especially the SX.
Titec Scoper was the double dropper iirc
Thats the ones, we had three, two on the girls Stinky JRs and one on my SX. How did we ever manage without a dropper.
This afternoons job is fitting a longer one to the Turbo Levo
I made an effort - after lockdown kicked in - to try and ride my bikes each day to check they all still worked and how I felt about them. Only 5 though - how many do you have Steve!? My venerable M2 from 1998 is now frame only. My conclusion is that I still like riding them all - span the range from Kilaeua (rigid 26" SS), couple of much more recent 29r MTBs (one rigid, one HT) an all purpose tourer/gravel bike and an old pre-loved Allez road bike.
I'm not sure what I'd be doing with something like that though. Emotion preclude selling it, but donation to a bike project? That is a beefy bike in weight...
We've still got your frame Tracey - it was the boy's first FS and has certain sentimental value and the welding is stunning.
Looks like it needs some TLC - can anyone post a pic of the bolt arrangement where the rear shock attaches to the linkage as it's gone missing. Thanks

Yes but they also related to the bikes being heavy and heavier.
It doesn't look a million miles from my Norco, I can believe it's that heavy.
I had a Scoper for that as well, it didn't last long, bloody useless and even more weight to lug about, didn't help that the seat tower was too high to begin with.

Yup, had one of those for my SX Trail, it was the rubbish icing on the disappointing cake.
