We are planning to ride from Glencoe, up the Staircase and then take the access road to the south side of the damn. Then nip across and drop down the Cairan path.
How "illegal" is this, and is there and alternative otherwise? I seem to remember crossing just below the damn on foot once, but it was pretty messy, and it's been raining here for days.

Have done it a few times. Just go up to the dam and walk across the top of it you might have to climb up onto the wall if the gates are closed but easy enough
We went over the actual dam (two bike-over-gate bits).
There was a pre65 motorbike trial going under the dam, which had churned it all up.
I've [i]heard[/i] (coughs) that its easy to lift over the gate, ride along the dam then lift over the gate at the other end. Never seen anyone 'official' at the dam the 3 times I've been there.
