Which would you go for. Both same price. Bird much higher spec.

I will be using it mainly for xc and towing my toddler son . Have a FS for the other stuff..

Unable to demo as there are no dealers in the area and it is a replacement for a stolen bike being organised by my insurance company.

Bird wins it on spec, probably best to test ride, add an Orange Crush for extra confusion.

Thanks guys, got a solution to the bolt through. A company in America (ship to Uk) make Thru Axles with a built on trailer hitch for the trailer we use. About £40 but at lest it won't limit me to QR rears.

How bizarre? Just replied to your post on Knaresborough rides and I ride a 905 custom spec with narrower bars you are welcome to try it out.

York cycle works have Whyte on demo.

Spooky. Just had both my bikes knicked (Bronson and a Zesty). Looking to replace the zesty with a hardtail as that will be better with the trailer. Will be in touch when I move over. Exchange on tracts next week all being well...

I was in a similar position for a new bike I was getting through C2W, I had it down to the Whyte 805 or the Bird zero.3.

Went for the Bird and I'm glad I did as the guys at Bird have been very helpful, they weren't part of halfords c2w scheme but between them and Halfords it was sorted in a few days.

I would buy the Bird on service alone, but its also a great spec for the money.

I would expect the Whyte to be faster uphill and the bird faster down the trickier stuff, so given your XC statement the geo of the whyte may be better suited. I've not ridden the bird but have ridden a crush and imagine it similiar, I have a 905, ablbeit pre-650b. The 905 is quite harsh but precise.

Ah sorry, I didn't spot that you'd gone for the 3. Interesting that you got it on C2W though, but good. Mine replaced a Kona I'd had for 12 years so was a bit different, but Im enjoying it more the more I ride it.

What colour Bird did you go for Gary. The guys at bird said the blue looks amazing up close . Apparently painted in the same factory as Santa Cruz....

I went for acid yellow/pink as I like to blend in 🙂

Plus I'm not a fan of blue bikes really and if I went for blue I would have had to go for white forks which is just wrong, plus blue and black really clash so component wise it would have been tricky. So yeh acid yellow/pink and I did put some thought into it!

The blue, up close (in the dark on a camera phone - looks better in the sunlight).

As long as it's covered in mud by Sunday, that's the main thing. Hope you enjoy it.

Looking forward their how you get on. Based on the fact that I have a blue camelback and a couple of blue jerseys, I would have to opt for a blue frame - you have to look coordinated, it makes yo ride better..... Get the issue with black forks though.....

So had the first ride on my new Bird Zero.3 on Saturday and absolutely loved it.

My wife's comment on looking at the bike was 'oh that looks big', and it does. Squared off chainstays and a 130mm fork give it a really chunky burly look, my wife then picked it up and was very surprised how light it was. I haven't weighed it yet but its around 27lb.

The local woods are 5 minutes ride away but as you can imagine they are extremely muddy at the moment. Bear in mind this is my first ride on 650b, 130mm forks, wide bars so I expected a few 'of this feels odd' moments, but it wasn't the case at all. The bike just felt really, really natural right from the start.

It's fair to say it was hard to get any rhythm going in the woods though as it was a serious mud fest, nothing to do with the bike, but where I could put the hammer down the Bird spread it's wings and flew. It's fast, a lot lighter than it looks, agile and a whole heap of fun. Slipping off the back of the saddle on a rooty short and steep decent I could feel how much fun this bike is going to be.

I was a bit concerned that being more of an old school xc rider the bike wouldn't suit me but its fantastic. It just felt right straight out of the box with no tweaking at all, which is testament to how will the guys at Bird built the bike up.

I can't wait to get out on it again.

I do ride to work, 20 miles each way. Thanks for asking. Are you the 'ride to work' police?

I'm 5'8" and got the medium drumon, which feels perfect.
