Just read on their FB that a steel frames in design. Be interesting to see how they compete with other British companies, if the frames not sub 300 they won't do that well IMO.

Why would they not do well if the frames are more than £300?

Cotic and Pace seem to do OK - it is only really On One that are very inexpensive.

Hi Darrenspink - we tried to make sure its not as harsh as it might look by splaying the seat stays a lot and not cross bracing them (theres a small gusset instead). We also used a fairly heavily machined chainstay brace which allows for some flex too. Its not going to be as compliant as steel, but its not a jarring ride. If you were worried about stiffness then dropping the reverb will have the biggest effect as you would get more compliance from a standard seat post than we could build into the frame - theres a lot of misconceptions about how much softness is really added by snake shaped stays etc. They help but really don't offer a great advantage we found over something as simple as seatpost choice.

All that said - its not a soft frame by any standard, its a tough, go anywhere, do anything kind of frame.

With regards to pricing, whether its steel or aluminium we're a complete bike company in principle. You can buy a frame seperately if you wish to do so, and I think we offer good value for the product we sell, but there will always be cheaper options. Our complete bikes offer the real value for money, and our unique semi-custom model means you can spec a lot of the components to suit your style and riding terrain. One less stolen bike

Through our unique transferable warranty, buyers can be certain that the person selling the Bird really owns it.

The transfer process allows the buyer to check the history of that bike, ensuring that if you buy a second hand bird, you can be certain its not someone's stolen pride and joy.

My intention was to get a 650b frame that had some 'give' hence the steel 45650b.

I dunno about the new ones with wishbone stays, but the old ones had no give in them! I'd like a steel bike for it's toughness, they seem to shrug off the general low level abuse that leaves aluminium frames dented and showing their age after a while.

If i was looking for another frame these'd be top of my list, a) they're local, and b) I always said I'd like an aluminium 456.

letmetalktomark I wanted to achieve two things with this idea: 1) to increase the resale value of the Bird products - by offering a transferrable guarantee we ensure that when someone sells a Bird, the buyer knows if theres a problem with that frame we'll stand by it. That of course has its own problems, so we designed a way in which we can track who's selling the bike in order to insure that we don't get a frame thats been crashed & trashed and hence refused a warranty, then popping up again from a poor soul thats bought said frame and thinks it should be covered by warranty - to continue the warranty you must register the transfer with us.

2) both by design, but also as a handy by product of this process we will then be able to provide an HPI check style service, which means that the buyer gets assurance that they are getting a forward warranty, but also knows that the person selling the frame or bike is the person that bought the bike from us (or from someone else that transferred it to them). This will hopefully have two effects - to prevent theft to a certain degree, or at least make stolen Bird bikes hard to sell which will eventually impact their theft desirability, but also to prevent knock off frames being sold. I am amazed that the likes of Pinarello haven't done something similar. Only a few days ago my friend discovered his secondhand Pinarello was in fact a chinarello. I guess you have to be willing to offer a lifetime transferrable warranty to make that work, and most (read all - I think we're unique here) wouldn't.

Once the system is bedded in we'll be adding some extensions to allow for offering it as a service that other manufacturers can use if they want to.

Actually I think it'd just require commitment from manufacturers to do this. Garmin accept there's a 2nd hand market in their products and even if out of warranty you can add the serial number to your account. So in theory they could provide a semi-anonymised history of the device (say with only the last owner listed). No reason bike companies couldn't do the same.
