Just asking really. I'm a long-legged 5' 11" ½ and recently test rode a large, and found it - well - a little large (or long, more to the point). I want to sling my leg over a medium as the numbers look very similar to some other larger bikes I've ridden and liked, although I'm a little concerned by the amount of post I'd need to have showing.

In the meantime I'd be interested to see how others have found they size up, and what you think of them generally.

(I should add I liked it and am considering buying one - very impressed by how it pedalled)

5'8" , I have a medium aeris.
The fit suits me well I think, although with a 100mm reverb fitted, there's only about 25mm of lower seat post exposed, so it wouldn't fit anyone much smaller.

I'm just shy of 5'10" and have a medium Aeris, which seems to fit well. I have a 150mm reverb and don't have any of the lower post showing.

Generally, I've been really happy with the bike. The guys at Bird were really good and helped me to get the best bike for the budget I had- they also helped me decide what frame, stem and seat post would work best for me.

What have you been riding previously and how long a stem was on the test bike?

I'm 6'1" and ride a large, and it feels spot on, (it's got a short stem 35mm? From spec) and just changed to some wider 780 bars from the ones it came with.

5'9" but with a long inside leg of 33" and ride a Medium with a 35mm stem. Running a 125mm reverb with close to 3" of post so could have gone with a 150mm drop quite easily.

Im exactly same as you and test rode their medium and it fitted nicely for me if that helps
I never got round to buying one but definitely would and I'd go medium with 150 droper for me

6ft and have a large, doesn't seem that long to me. Have owned a medium Pitchs and a medium Trance SX.

Thanks all. Some good feedback.

What have you been riding previously and how long a stem was on the test bike?

Saracen Ariel 151 (large), Orange Five (large) and an Orange Alpine 160 (large), all on 40-50mm stems. The L Aeris had a 35mm stem, which is one of the reasons I'm asking - not a lot of scope for going shorter there!

In terms of reach and wheelbase the above bikes and the M Aeris are almost identical, albeit that the Aeris has a 'genuine' seat tube angle, as opposed to one where the seat tube is either kinked or joins the down-tube as opposed to the bottom bracket.

5'9" but with a long inside leg of 33" and ride a Medium with a 35mm stem. Running a 125mm reverb with close to 3" of post so could have gone with a 150mm drop quite easily.

That's good to know. I've an inside leg of 32-33".

I went and tested the medium & large on land near to their shop a few weeks a go and decided I felt slightly more comfortable on the medium so took that to Swinley for a better test. Its a lot longer than my current medium GT and really enjoyed it , peddled way better than I was expecting and installed a lot of confidence on trails I'd never been to before. I think I could possibly run either size but for the majority of my riding the medium will be better suited.

For reference I'm 5'10 with shorter legs 31/32"

I don't think I'd be able to run a 150mm dropper on the large either, I'm just deciding on colour and spec at the moment before ordering one.
The two guys who helped me were both helpful with all my questions which was great.

Neil - stop messing about and get a medium 🙂

As Dubber says there, you could probably ride both. I have a 150mm dropper on mine and a 40mm stem I think. A year since I bought it, it's done 2800km and at no point have I thought 'I wish I'd bought the bigger one'. I am a dwarf from the hips down tho - 31 inch legs, long back so all that top tube is great for fitting my gibbon like frame in!

😆

I can procrastinate for a little longer - there's none in the UK for a bit yet. 😉

I am quite short at 5"9 but have taken to sizing up to a large in my last bike and would do so next time if the geometry isnt quite there.

It looks like the Bird is pretty long though with a medium reach of 449mm that puts it longer than some brands large bikes - Very modern geometry from the Bird guys.

I am all for longer bikes and shorter stems so if you could ride the large with a 30-40mm stem why not? I would prefer to do that than ride a medium with a 60mm stem or be cramped with a shorter one.

I have a lovely problem. I'm getting an Aeris but not sure what size. I've got a large classic Soul (610mm ett + 70mm stem + saddle pushed right back on an inline dropper) and at 6' 1" I'm between a large and an XL but I'm thinking an XL (660 ett) with a 35mm stem and the saddle in the right position.

What say you STW?

Similar position but slightly taller than you, I'm not sure so have decided the only way to stop procrastinating is to test both in a few weeks time.

Definitely get the large OP.

Looking at the geometry compared to Mondraker bikes I've owned and ridden. Id be buying the XL at 6' and putting a 30 or 35mm stem on it.

I'm 6' 2" on an XL with a 50mm stem. Deffo more stretched out than my old XL mk2 Mega's, which is a good thing. Great bike.

Spoke to Bird today and have opted for the XL with a 35mm stem as it will put me in pretty much the same seated position as my Soul with a 70mm stem.

Excited like a fat kid in a sweetshop...

😆

I'm still procrastinating like an MP presented with an expenses admission form. Hopefully I should stick a leg over a M this weekend, which should nail the argument.

Definitely get the large OP.

Looking at the geometry compared to Mondraker bikes I've owned and ridden. Id be buying the XL at 6' and putting a 30 or 35mm stem on it.

Having ridden a L I know it would work, but it did feel a little stretched. If I lived somewhere full of fast open descents it would be an utter no-brainer as that stretch and longer wheelbase would be an asset, but I ride lots on twisty woodland trails.

Going the other way, the M numbers are incredibly similar to two bikes I've already ridden and like lots. Logically I think you're right - but the proof, as they say, is in the pudding (although what pudding has to do with this, I have no idea).

Hence this thread... 🙂

6'2" on a large Aeris with 35 mm stem and 150 mm dropper post. Not too cold. Not too cold. Just right!

Enjoy your new bike,
Gaidong

so I'm 6.2/3 (not actually sure but say 6.3) and tested large and XL this week.

The large is longer than my 20" 45650b by quite some distance, however the XL is what I felt most comfortable on. I was blown away. I was worried the XL would be incapable of being fun or would be gate like but it was fantastic and still keen to pop off of whatever it was pointed at.

Order placed!

@superstu - what build did you go for? Congrats btw, you're going to love it. I had the same concerns and it whilst my XL isn't quite as flickable as my Soul in 1 or 2 local spots (very, very tight off camber roots) it's amazing on everything else. Have fun and we want pics!

6'2" here and I've just ordered an XL in Orange 🙂 Bought a 35mm stem to go with it too.

Should be here next week and I can't wait!

I'd just like to add, Bird are fantastic with daft questions from customers too!

Wouldn't hesitate buying again and my Wife is looking at getting one too later in the year.

+1 on Ben and co being fantastic. My advice is listen to their advice! I think they must try every product they can and really think about the little things to choose what they use and sell.

My son, Finn, is 5'11" and rides a large with a 35mm stem. He loves it - and so do I and I'm 5'9"! Go large!

Went with superstu this week. Bird let us try a large and xl, said we had all day with them - no hurry. Listened to all our stupid questions (and I mean stupid - first full sussers, never used a dropper before - I know - the shame).

Cant recommend them enough.

@superstu - what build did you go for?

I've gone for x fusion sweeps, monarch rt3, slx brakes, 1 x 10 with expander (cost cutting as budget is tight), reverb...£1,900. Cannot wait, although think it will be end of May that it comes in. Will post pics when it arrives!

I'm 6'3" and ordered the xl after trying both l and xl last week. The xl felt so comfortable and stable, gave so much confidence.

Can't wait to pick it up in a few weeks.

I'm 6'1" got a L a few weeks ago. Fits perfect for me, I didn't have a test ride beforehand but it felt right as soon as I stepped onto it after building it up.
35mm stem, 150 dropper btw.
