Biking near New York in March - OK?

I have the possibility of picking up a couple of days' work in New York in March 2024.

Which is nice.

When I travel with work, I always like to bolt on some biking wherever feasible. But I've never biked in the US, so I don't know whether the weather in March in the NY/NJ area is amenable to a good time on the trails.

And, if it is, any tips on locations for good scenic upper intermediate riding?

Ta

I normally blag their boris bikes and get out in the mornings, just cycling around the city is nice and sight-seeing-y. Its really cold that time of year.

Firstly, how do people get these jobs where companies send them to places?

Also, I've been to NYC in the first week of March and riding a bike was the last thing on my mind. It was about -15 outside during the day. The wind was physically painful, it felt like blades. We mostly shuffled from shop to shop buying gloves, scarves, hats etc. It was brutal.

Some DH/Enduro style in the Catskills? About 3 hours from NYC. My wife almost did a secondment out there about 10 years ago and that was about the best we could find that suited us.

Probably pretty cold (or extremely wet) though. Last time we were there in late March the mountains were still white apparently.

A company that I used to work for sent me to Kenya to run a marathon in the Kenyan Highlands, on a game reserve. We had a few game drives (saw lions, elephants, rhino, etc), met some very famous runners, had a good time. I'm not sure how I blagged that other than slightly exaggerating my endurance capabilities!

The furthest I've been since then is Aberdeen, which couldn't be mistaken for the Kenyan Highlands in any respect other than taking almost as long to get there. 😀

Thanks all.

I'm spotting a trend in these comments that it might be too cold and/or snowy. Maybe skiing instead then!

Yep you’d be better doing a day trip skiing. They used to do a shuttle bus from the Burton Snowboard store in Soho from memory.

it could be fun to find an area with groomed trails and go fat biking.

Still well below freezing in March generally.  Not sure there'll be anywhere to ride.  I spent a year upstate and it was still too cold in April for a ride in the countryside...  NYC might be slightly warmer but still baltic...

Could do laps of Central Park if it's not too cold perhaps

Bear Mountain in NJ has skiing, but is low so March might be a bit late. When its warmer it's a goodish Enduro/ DH location w  bike hire and kit. Buy good bike specific insurance
