I've always gone for two hold bags when taking a bike. My friend just flew BA and the cost for an extra bag was nearly as much as the flight so she took a bike bag only and packed all her clothes in there.
With the likes of Easyjet/Flybe do people normally book one bike or one bike and hold baggage? Always assumed bike had to be on its own. Should be under most weight limits as it is a 1 week warm weather trip with road bike.
Bike and kit (pads etc.) in bike bag, clothes in a max-size carry on.
BA if you book the higher level gives you a 23kg hold bag and a 23kg in-plan bag for the money.
That's what i've just booked anyway.
Bike plus single carry-on is always a struggle but just about possible for a short trip. This time we have an extra hold bag between the two of us for a two month trip, and that was hard enough. The bike doesn't come in much under 21kg in the hard case, so not much gets packed with it.
Mine is 23 packed (limit here) so always take 2 or sometimes 3 if its a long trip. Nice to have the right stuff and not overdo the hand luggage.
1x Bike bag - For the bike and a bit of padding
1x Hold baggage with clothes and kit, spares, tools etc..
1x Carry on rucksack with odds and sods
For the sake of £36 (Easyjet anyway) it's got to be cheaper than paying for overweight bags
Never had any issues and always been a little under weight

When I did Canada this year I put the bike on as hold luggage with helmet etc in and packed my hand luggage with everything else. Air Canada allow 2 cabin bags which made it easier.
