All of the recent new kit (road discs, dropper posts, really adjustable suspension, the latest super-light components) has made me think...

What do you think mountain and road bikes will be like in 25 years?

Mountain = <20lbs, 6" travel full suspension, adjustable geometry and travel at the flick of a switch, gearboxes and electronic control of multiple systems similar to the M-button on an M5 (race/sport/pootle modes)

Road = 30mm micro suspension activated only when rough enough, <15lbs, discs, very aero looking unlike current designs, also possibly CVT for non-racing road bikes

No gears, assistance by electric motor and stored energy.

Fatter tyres.

Re-invention of the full mudguard and enclosed drivetrain.

UCI still insisting on outdated designs.

For off road

Belt drives, & internal gear hubs

The 26" vs 29" vs 32" vs other wheel sizes debate will still be going on

Electric will be common for commuter/ comfort.

for the road, electric shifting will be common / standard, OLD wider than 130mm to get more than current 11 speed of Campag Super Record / 2013 Dura Ace

Disc brakes common / standard

Integration, like ANT+ will be standard

For all bikes, lots and lots of Carbon Fiber.

Frames, wheels and other components made from graphene, tyres made from nano tech smart rubber that can extend/ retract nobbles which are neurally controlled, neural controlled gear shifting, super cooled damping units with zero friction in forks again neurally controlled with presets to choose from.

Oh sorry you said 25 not 250 haha

I wonder about downloadable suspension setups for particular trial centers - Cannondale were working on something similar a few years ago!

ANT+ will be 20 years out of date.
Bluetooth low-power replaced it, and lasted 5 years.
Some other mad standard replaced that.
Apple failed to comply to the standard and developed their own version.

But yeah, lots of electronic stuff will be integrated.

People will have hacked into other riders electronic shifting during pro-races.

and then someone will bust out an ancient set of 105 kit, with CABLES!

all the stuff that we think is still new-ish and clever, has been around for donkeys years on other vehicles.

(disc brakes, suspension, composites, etc.)

i reckon that all the technology that will be used on bikes in 25years is already here...
